Islam was created in the 7th century by a man called a Muhammed who to Muslims is considered a Prophet. Muhammed and his earliest disciples used Islam at first to help unite the Arab world and eventual conquest of many terror tries. Furthermore, the expansion by and from the Arab world. This new faith called Islam led to conquests from many different areas, most notably Spain all the way to places such as Northern India. The author in this book tracks the rise of Islam from it 7th century beginnings with the life of the Prophet Muhammad to the collapse of the Islamic empire in the early 10th century. The author Omid Safi is an American Professor of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University, where he is the Director of Duke Islamic Studies Center, and a columnist for On Being.Dr. Safi specializes in Islamic mysticism (Sufism), contemporary Islamic thought and medieval Islamic history. He has served on the board of the Pluralism project at Harvard University and is the co-chair of the steering committee for the Study of Islam and the Islamic Mysticism Group at the American Academy of Religion. Before joining Duke University, Dr. Safi was a professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

In addition, he is the editor of the volume Progressive Muslims: On Justice, Gender, and Pluralism, which offered an understanding of Islam rooted in social justice, gender equality, and religious and ethnic pluralism. His works Politics of Knowledge in Premodern Islam, dealing with medieval Islamic history and politics, and Voices of Islam: Voices of Change were published 2006. His last book, which is the Memories of Muhammad, deals with the biography and legacy of the Prophet
