The Rich vs. the Poor Robert B. Reich wrote The Work of Nations in 1991. In one of his chapters “Why the Rich Are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer,” he talked about three different economic boats in society. One of the boats is filled with routine workers. He observes that this boat was declining because of improvements in production facilities. The second boat was filled with in-person servers, and Reich mentioned that this boat was declining as well, but more slowly. Last but not least, Reich explained that the third boat was filled with the symbolic analysts who not only identify and solves problems, but rely on the same global web that dominates the pattern of the cooperate structure. Symbolic analyst are people who identify and solves problems such as highly capable executives, engineers, consultants, marketing experts, publicist and entertainers. The symbolic analyst are the ones that are rising steadily. The reasons that the symbolic analyst are getting richer are that their high in demand, their techniques and ideas are communicated easily without gaps in terms of time and less cost. Unlike the other boats symbolic analyst are constantly wanted throughout the United States. The symbolic analysts will have a high level of education, both in the classroom and on the job experience. The work of a symbolic analysts involves puzzles, experiments, games, and a large amount of conversations (Reich 434). Symbolic analysts are different from other job classifications in terms of status, responsibility, mobility, and pay. However, not every symbolic analysts are rising as quickly as others. Symbolic analysts at the low end are scarcely holding up in the economy, but on the other hand, symbolic analysts at the top are thriving and are in such great demand that they have a hard time keeping up with their wages. Symbolic analysts who make up the creative knowledge economy have been hit by a modern decline, just as everyone else had. Never before in the past have great wealth been on a scale that was gained by people who have earned it and earned it legally (Reich 431). But over the long duration, symbolic analysts will do just fine, as long as they stay away from job roles that are becoming routinized. In Reich’s essay, he explains why routine and in-person servers were getting poor and why symbolic analysts were getting rich. Routine workers are becoming poor because of machines replacing them. In-person servers are also becoming poor due to self-working machines.
