The Rhetorical Triangle: Is it Effective or Not?
The rhetorical triangle is a technique used to utilize and compose thoughts in a way that appeal to and persuade an audience. The three components that base these persuasions are pathos (emotions), ethos (creditability), and logos (reasoning). Many creditable people have used the rhetorical triangle in their speeches showing this technique to be effective. Abraham Lincoln, the nation’s sixteenth President, is a perfect example showing that when effectively used the power and application of the rhetorical triangle can positively alter thoughts and feelings of an audience.
Abraham Lincoln is well-educated man who uses powerful inspirational words in his speech the Gettysburg Address, and has received great success by using emotions or pathos in his speech. Pathos means to appeal emotionally to the heart and mind of an audience. In order for a speech to be successful, the audience must embrace the emotions that are within a speech. The orator not only needs to appeal to the heart but also to the mind of an audience and if the audience does not grasp these feelings, the result will be unsuccessful. However, in Lincolns’ case the use of intense emotions persuades the audience to empathize with him the painful and heart wrenching loss of the many lives on the battlefield during the Civil War. Lincoln gives reinforced concern for the victims using words such as “hallow,” “brave,” “unfinished work,” and “that these dead shall not die in vain” (Lincoln, 1635). Lincoln’s use of pathos shows compassion for the lives lost and exhibits that he is not just speaking for those who sacrificed themselves for a better future “…which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced,” but also t...

The rhetorical triangle is an active interaction between the person who is speaking, the audience, and the direction the presentation is going. Without an equal relevance of the three elements pathos, ethos, and logos, a speech can end in an unsuccessful result. However, if all elements correlate in the speech such as in Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, then the result will prove to be effective.

Pathos is the author's use of emotions and sympathy to urge the audience to agree with his or her standpoint. And lastly, logos apply sound reasoning (logic) to attract the typical ideas of the audience and to prove the author's point of view. "Lockdown" by Evans D. Hopkins is a fine example of an author using these appeals to persuade his audience. Hopkins uses of the three appeals are easy to locate and relate to throughout the entire passage. He undoubtedly uses rhetoric to try and keep his audiences focused and to persuade them to feel the way he does about the treatment of prisoners.

One is logos, which is used to support an argument through hard data and statistics. Another is ethos, which is the credibility of an author or speaker that allows an audience to conclude from background information and language selection a sense of knowledge and expertise of the person presenting the argument. The impact of pathos, however, is the most effective tool in persuasion due to the link between emotions and decisions. The president then had his turn. He spoke in his high, penetrating voice and in a little over two minutes delivered the Gettysburg Address, surprising many in the audience by its shortness and leaving others quite unimpressed.
Abraham Lincoln is regarded by many Americans as the greatest president to ever hold office in the history of the United States, and his reputation is definitely well deserved. Lincoln wasn't scared to stand up and fight for what he knew was right. He was convinced that within the branches of government, the presidency alone was empowered not only to uphold the Constitution, but also to protect, and defend it. As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization, and he rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that changed the war into a battle for freedom and declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy. That November, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address, which stated how a country must be dedicated to human freedom in order to survive. (Donald, 1995) Lincoln believed that democracy could be a lasting form of government. He showed a nobility of character that had worldwide appeal, and he was a man of great integrity. However, Lincoln was not only the 16th president of the United States, he was an American hero. Lincoln was a well-rounded individual and he had numerous outstanding qualities. However, it is important to remember that Lincoln also led a private life, complete with close friends and family.
President Lincoln, King George VI, and President F. Roosevelt all gave speeches facing a conflict and they used ethos, pathos, and logos when persuading their audiences of the arguments they presented. The term rhetorical means “expressed in terms intended to persuade or impress” (dictionary.com, rhetorical). Almost every author and poet uses rhetorical devices within their literature. Even if a writer doesn't try to use rhetoric within their stories, it is almost hard to avoid. Some examples of rhetorical devices are imagery, personification, and diction. Within the sermon titled “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards and the “Speech to the Virginia Convention” by Patrick Henry, the writer's use smileys, rhetorical questions, and appeal to fear to help develop their main points.
Rhetorical Analysis and Persuasion Every day we are victims to persuasion whether anyone can notice it or not. Logos, pathos and ethos are the types of persuasion. Logos persuades by reason, pathos by appealing to emotion and ethos by the credibility of the author.
