The Responsibility that Comes with Modern Information and Communication Technolgy

The introduction of technology into human life has made it easier for man to do work faster and more efficient in various companies and industries. In 1973, Martin Cooper, senior development engineer of Motorola, invented the first handheld cell phone. This technological breakthrough made life super easy for businesspersons, government agencies, and parents to communicate and do business. College students, especially those in relationships, could now communicate with each other directly without disturbing another’s important call. Most scientific and technological breakthroughs had its good and bad side; however, the invention of smart phones by the International Business Machines in 1992 became one of the discoveries that marveled many people. Mobile phones were invented to make calls, but with the smart phone, one can make a phone call, while texting and probably playing the Pitch Perfect soundtracks on the background. Technology has brainwashed today’s youth, making them surf the web, while forgetting what is important, spending quality time with people who loves them no matter what. Technology has given teenagers an extended umbilical cord that makes them access the dooming social media in a twinkle of an eye. Despite the fact that technology is helpful, “it has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity,” as Albert Einstein said. Technology has destroyed many relationships, either parental or friendly relation, caused teenagers to be hurt through social media, and proselytized teenagers from their good manners and communication skills to socially unaccepted behaviors as Sherry Turkle thoroughly explained in her recent book Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Othe... ... middle of paper ... ...ers away from their morals. In a way or two, social media and mobile technology have brought society together, but it is threatening to push it further apart in the future generations.
