Pregnancy is a naturally occurring event, and parents are responsible for providing a healthy and safe environment for the unborn child while maintaining an optimal emotional and physical health. The pregnant woman should not just ensure that the pregnancy affect her adversely, but also that she does not affect her baby’s prenatal adversely. The parent is the only route which different environmental factors can enter the fetus. It is imperative that during fetal development that the parents provide an environment that is healthy and safe for fetal development and neonatal development. In this study case of baby Sam, it is unfortunate that Roberto lost his job, but that created a stressful situation, which drove Jane to start drinking heavily. These two environmental factors, alcohol and stress, contributed greatly to Sam’s prematurity, other immediate health problems, and future psychological problems. However, Jane stress could have been reduced through other mean like exercise or a good social support. Additionally baby Sam will need close monitoring for his physical health and mental to minimize the consequences of environmental factors on prenatal development.
