Managers have come to playing an important role in managing organizations in both non-profit oriented and profit oriented which make the society operate well. As Robbins, Bergman, Stagg and Coulter (2008) has stated that managers should not consider their job as a personal achievement but rather helping other to achieve efficiently and effectively. In the essay an attempt will be made to examine the relevance of early managerial concepts to modern mangers as well as to discuss the functions and impacts in an organisation’s general environment that relates to the organisation of the manger that was interviewed. The manager that was interviewed for the essay is Mr Ettiene as his managerial status is a middle level manger in a public service sector, Pick n Pay. As a floor manager in Pick n Pay he is entail to take charge of large number of staffs at amount of more than 20 members. He is required to ordering stock and managing staff as well as assisting with other general manager’s functions. Firstly, a brief description will be further made relating to management work. Additionally, a discussion will be made along with identifying whether Fayal’s four functions are relevant to the management work of Mr. Ettiene. Thirdly, a discussion will be further taken on about the impact of the economic and technological conditions in the Pick n Pay’s general environment upon the work of the manager interviewed. To conclude, from analysing the interview taken, in Fayol’s four function has greatly impacted in the essence of Mr. Ettiene’s role as a floor manager in the middle level sector of management in Pick n Pay. Furthermore, evidence gathered from this assignment as declared that Mr.Ettiene has carried out a great scope of organising and controlling functions were as planning and leading are less in the range of management functions. The interview also focused on the economic and technological conditions that have a major influence in the Mr. Ettiene workplace. In the history of management thinking, there are many ways to manage an organization, such as scientific management and administrative management. This essay will discuss the notion that scientific management was a ‘good’ idea in the history of management thinking, by looking at the historical backgrounds and political beliefs of economist, also how the develop management theory by conducting experiments, and how their theories made it into the managing business does and how do they work. First of all, what is management itself? Management as explained in the Organizational Behaviour book, is a set of activities such as planning, decision making, organizing, leading and controlling the organization’s resources including human, financial, physical, and information. In order for high performance result, achieving organizational goals efficiently and effectively. (Wood et al, 2006. pp12-13)
Through personal experience, Fayol distinguished what he thought to be the prime functions of being a manager. It is said that he was the first to illustrate the need for the education of management (Brodie, 1967, in Fells, 2000) and in relation to management; Fayol’s perspective was what managers should do. Through categorising business activities into six activities, technical; commercial; financial; security; accounting and management; Fayol’s work focused on the latter category, management (Fells, 2000, pg.345).
Managers nowadays do not actually do what a manager really should do back in the eighties. Changes that occurred in the new economy, the increasing use of technology in business, and the effects of globalisation towards business world have led management into a whole new dimension. New managers are expected to be able to manage on an international scale, act strategically, utilize technology, establish values, and of course, act responsibly as well. (Crainer, 1998) Henry Mintzberg once asked, "What do managers do?" After conducting his research based on a study of five CEOs, he concluded that managerial work involves interpersonal role, decisional role and informational role. And the fact is that, managers get things done through other people. Therefore, managers are required to possess certain skills and competencies which allow them to play these roles effectively and efficiently throughout the four functions of management. Frederick Taylor and Henri Fayol are both considered classical contributors to management theory. Both were developing and expression their viewpoints at similar time period with the aim of “raising standard of management in industry” (Brodie,1967, p7) in a period were very few publications and theories on management. Management plays a significant role in how business operates. The diversity of approaches to the theoretical and practical background of management has come up with several versions of what is meant by such key words as management and organization. The academia views expressed in relation to management theories take a different role than that prescribed to managers. There has not been any concrete definition of management even though the classic definition of Henri fayol still remains in contention to be the preferred choice after eighty years. In the context of what is required I would like to elaborate on the following journals.
The first writer who formally introduced the concept of management and its principles was Henry Fayol. Generations have benefitted from the deep insight and expert knowledge of his management elements and principles. However, rapid social, political, technological and economic developments, have stirred a debate in the intellectual circles concerned with management about his theory’s applicability in the current era and many have started declaring his theory as outdated and outmoded. This report is mainly concerned with this ongoing debate. While throwing light on the life of this great engineer-cum-manager, it would provide an insight into his management theories and historical development of management as a social science. Finally, apart from discussing the challenges posed to management by the 21st century, this report would also try to build a case in favor of his theory’s applicability in the present era.

Over 50 years ago, English-speaking managers were directly introduced to Henry Fayol’s theory in management. His treatise, General and Industrial Management (1949), has had a great effect on managers and the practice of management around the world. However, 24 years after the English translation of Fayol, Henri Mintzberg in the Nature of Managerial Work (1973) developed another theory and stated that Fayol’s work was just “folklores”.
