The Relationship Between Technology and The Media
Look around us today, what do you see? Technology being thrown at you from all kinds of places. For one the media has brought technology to another level. But if you really look at the whole picture technology is media. The both of them interact with each other. We are swamped by media and technology, having no control over it, and don't know what to believe about technology anymore. Technology is blasted on 260,000 billboards, 17,000 newspapers, 12,000 periodicals, 27,000 video outlets for renting tapes, 400 million television sets, and well over 400 million radios.
The media always brings us the up to date advances in technology, whether it is a new form of Internet connection or diet pills. Media is always there for technology. The television is a source of media where a TV producer or reporter does not has complete control over the contents of programs. The interests and inclinations of the audience have as much to do with the what is on television as do the ideas of the producer and reporter. But television cannot survive without advertising, so television turns into the middleman and the true ruler of the majority is advertising. Which brings in society and what they want to hear. I am very sure that middleman that has recently purchased a cellular phone that he saw in the newspaper as being the "must have" will cause brain tumors for him 15 years later.
Why doesn't the media protect the public from harmful technologies. Why doesn't the government step into this problem. Sooner or later (probably sooner) Microsoft will have a monopoly on the whole computer world especially those dealing with software. I think this is ridiculous. Bill Gates seems like a greedy little person who will just get greedier. The media supports technology in every way. How many times you do see Neil Postman on your TV set compared to Bill Gates.
Now a days no one has complete control over media or technology, it is run by large companies that are dying to sell you the latest luxuries to inhance your intelligence or fun.
Media has had many changes in the past years. Growing up I remember my mom saying that we were lucky to have color televisions now. She would say that when she was younger she would have to hear her stories and games over the radio because back then there was no televisions. Another way of getting entertained was reading stories. The newspaper and the radio was the only way of getting news back then. I thought it was funny when my mom told me that since they were one of the few families that had a television in the neighborhood, she would charge the kids 10 cents to watch television in her house. This was actually a pretty smart thing to do.
Media has alway been important today and back then. Media helped shed light on problems that need to be addressed. This is what happened in the 60s during Jim Crow. In little rock, a few high school students took a big stand. They had the apply to go to central high school, it was a bigger thing than they thought it was. This caused a big media uproar as well as the realize that the world can be full of hate. I think media helped because it got others to see what's happening somewhere else and how it can let others see the true in what's happening in the world.
Media can influence every home in America. Not only is it capable of influence through television, but it can influence through magazines, newspapers, word of mouth, even clothing! The qualities of a person media tends to influence most, is their self-esteem and personality. Women are especially seen as being influenced, but men are in the bunch as well, although less published. Children are being brought into the influence as well at younger ages each generation. With more media influence in families, we can expect more social problems.
It is quite often oblivious to all of us, the effect that media has on us. However, where ever we look the effects of media have altered the coarse of living. The clothes we wear, the sports we play, the music we listen to and our political opinions, are all aspects that are influenced by the media.
In the past couple of decades, media has been emerging to become a major part of human civilization; it certainly has changed and shaped our lifestyle, culture, and future. Media brings variety of things to our lives, both positively and negatively. It has made our lives more entertained, resourceful, engaged, connected, updated, and abundant. It is nearly impossible to find someone living without a smart phone, laptop, tablet, and or television. People are so connected to media and technology for various reasons, and one being the access to media content. It is harder and harder to see an individual carrying a newspaper with him or her; instead, we see people read news on their devices and television. Furthermore, people can also access to
The world we live in is one of innovation and growth. Technology has expanded and grown significantly over the past several decades. At the forefront of this evolution is the media. Over the past several hundred years, the media has seen substantial growth. While print media has been a staple of society for many decades, the internet and other forms of media have revolutionized the way we receive information.
Whether technology is with us or hurting us, we still have to use it and it affects our lives daily. We need it to get a hold of someone. We need it to do our jobs. Most importantly, we need it to keep our lives away from harm. There are many ways to manipulate technology, but technology has more good to it than bad. There are those who use it for good, like investigators so they can figure out the real story. Then there are those who use it for bad, just like those who commit cyber bullying along with other minor and major things. We need technology regardless if people argue they like or not. There is no way to stop technology and keeping people from making it better. With the developments in technology, we may be able to enjoy all the pricey luxuries and still enjoy life at the same time.
New media has a big influence on us, it shape our state of mind and how we behave, and most of the time I will say that influence is bad because we put too much attention on it, a lot of people no longer thinks by their selves, they act, react and think because we told them to think like that. New media shows us what is good or bad, and we trust it.
As Americans we take pride in our liberating government. But, it is essential to ask how much we, the general public, know about our democracy. Because of the representative structure of our government, it is in our best interest to remain as knowledgeable as possible about political affairs so that we can play an active role in our democracy by voting for candidates and issues. The media, which includes print, television, and the internet, is our primary link to political events and issues. (For the purposes of this essay only print and television will be considered.) Therefore, in order to assess the success of our democracy it is necessary to assess the soundness of our media. We are lucky enough to have a media, in theory, free from government influences because of our rights to freedom of press and freedom of speech, but we are still subject to the media’s interpretation and presentation of politics, as is the danger when depending on any source for information. So, we must address how the media informs us; how successful it is at doing so; and how we should respond to it.
The definition of mass media is “a means of communication that reaches large numbers of people in a short time, this can consist of the use of television, newspapers, magazine, and radio”, and within the last decade the internet as well. (HarperCollins) The media can actually be a minor or major effect on individuals depending on how or what their view is on the particular subject or matter. The effects it plays on individuals and societies will depend on the exposure to the subject matter at the time, but it effects all ages from young to old.
The media provides information to educate, inform or simply entertain its audience. The importance of the media is to publish the message worldwide, so that it can become popular with the public. The effects of media on our society are different some of them are even harmful. Media was one of the causes of World War I. Journalists and writers of that time tried to publish newspapers and magazines that were telling people how good nationalism was. They were advertising war and weapons.
Media and technology have an ever increasing role in how we as humans communicate with one another as well as help impact our culture. The printed word, once able to be mass produced helped usher in an era where where people could seek the education and reading skills they desired, brought print and knowledge to the masses. Now with the more common use of digital communication and media outlets, our options for information and communication are almost entirely unimpeded. Technology allows us to live through multiple Renaissance type periods filled with ever growing pools of information from which to share, and culture changing happenings coming from every corner of our connected world.
Media is the most powerful sector of an economy. It is a tool to maintain a balanced society which is characterized by well informed people, effective democracy and social justice. In fact, media has unparallel influence on all aspects of human life in modern times.
“How long you figure before we save up and get the fourth wall torn out and the fourth wall-TV installed?" If I think of the future of media I remember this quotation from Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451”. Will television remain an important part of mass media or will the Internet kill it? What role are mobile devices going to play and what about movies in 2020?
The history of mass media started with the invention of technology. The moment technology was invented; media has used it as an opportunity to expand to a wider audience. As technology develops it’s just a matter of time before the media becomes involved. There is no limit as to how involved the media will become.
