I can understand the reasoning and importance behind volunteering. It’s a valuable experience for everyone. Doing 12 hours wasn’t as horrible as doing the required amount of community service I did for the clubs I was in. Even then, since I had time, I would do more. Some of it was not noted since it didn’t feel right. I prefer to do things with reasoning from myself and my own heart. Doing the community service was my own choice and something I don’t need to be rewarded or given credit for choosing to do so. I chose to volunteer at Rice Care Center and Therapy Suites in Willmar, Minnesota. I chose to volunteer here because, I work in Therapy Suites and primarily interact with short-term patients. Since patients are there for rehabilitation, I do not get a lot of time to build relationship as they are busy with physical and occupational therapy and often have company throughout the day. During my time volunteering, I decided to go to the long-term units, Cushman Cottage and Sophia House, and spend time with the residents there. Another reason I decided to volunteer here is because not every resident gets company or a phone call for days, maybe even weeks at a time. I strongly believe everyone, regardless of age and status, craves interaction with another human being.
Volunteering to me has never been so much of a job that doesn’t pay. It is a way for me to give my time to help a cause, organization, or an event. I don’t volunteer because I need to get hours for school or for a club, I volunteer because I want to give back to my community. I feel a sense of belonging and importance when I volunteer, even if my job isn’t that significant. For the past two years, I have been volunteering at the Chicago Marathon. Even though I know that I play only a small part in such a large event, it gives me satisfaction knowing that I was part of helping the race run. My main focus on volunteering is to help and/or improve other individuals lives. Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. There is a different side of volunteering though. Many volunteers donate their time to help better the community they live in and the people that live in it. When they choose to do this they not only help others but they are also helping better themselves. Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities.

It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering.
