Crashing cannon balls, firing muskets, Calvary charging with blades of cold steel. These are the images that are presented to people when contemplating, which many people in our society do very often, the Napoleonic wars. The reality is quite the contrary, to some extent this image is true. The reality is the Napoleonic wars were ones of attrition. The goal of army’s were to have enough troops to sustain the ability to fight in the next battle. The British government had this attrition as one of the principal complications with their army and Navy do to their constant involvement in war no matter where public opinion stood.
The book read is titled Sharpe’s regiment by Bernard Cornwell. The book Sharpe’s regiment follows the path of a British army officer, Major Richard Sharpe and his right hand man sergeant Patrick Harper, as he fights in Spain and then is forced to come back to England on a recruitment trip, in order for him to continue fighting. His recruiting efforts are stopped along the way by various politicians many of which only care about the Navel power of England. One of the politicians that he first confronted was the secretary of war and he told him that he needed to fund the war in Spain more and that he wanted to have reinforcements to his division. The security says no. Then Sharpe makes his first major mistake of the book when he goes to the king and tries to convince him that Spain needs more troops. The king agrees but is shot down by the sectary of war and top level members of parliament. This conversation with the king will make Major Sharpe a not very well like man in London.

Sharpe has his unit go right in front of the king and have all of them hold a white feather, the sign of the king. This gets the kings favor and gives Sharpe the swing he needs to receive more troops. Sharpe is able to get these troops back to Spain and the epilog of the book explains the first battle after returning to Spain. The end of the book is the wedding ceremony between Sharpe and the women that helped him escapes earlier in the book. They fell in love while she was helping him
This battle seen takes place in the fields of Spain and France right at the border. Sharpe is able to lead his troops to win the battle and this catapults him into being known as a great commander. Sharpe is promoted to colonel and finally receives his own regiment, Sharps regiment.

Shaara’s novel Killer Angels shows the battle of Gettysburg through a number of unique viewpoints. Shaara offers a more intimate view of the battle than other Civil War novels. A reader can see the battle through the eyes of both Union and Confederate leaders. Through the novel the reader is able to see why each character is fighting and what they hope to gain from the war. Readers can also see the effect that the war has on the different characters. I will examine the war through the eyes of several different characters from Shaara’s novel.
The book opens with a Confederate spy as he made his way through the Union lines on the night of June 29, 1863 toward Confederate General Robert E. Lee bearing news of the Army of the Potomac as they crossed paths in the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The days after follow the various Union and Confederate regiments as they regained their wits about them after the previous Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Marching onward toward Gettysburg, where the most deciding battle of the Civil War would take place.
The first scene takes place at Antietam Creek, Maryland Sept. 17, 1862 at The Battle of Tatum. The Union marches on foot lead by Shaw, only to be bombarded with cannon shots and gunfire. After the battle he was taken to a hospital where he heard Lincoln would be issuing an emancipation proclamation to free the slaves. At a house party afterwards, Robert sees Gov. Andrew and meets Fredrick Douglas who tells him there is to be an all black regiment of which he would like Robert to be colonel. He asks his friend Kevin to assist him in leading this group. On November 27, 1862, black volunteer soldiers are brought to Readville Camp in Massachusetts. There we meet the main characters of the 54th Mass. Regiment. Rawlins is the future Sergeant Major and is a father figure to the group. Trip seems to have an angry personality who takes his frustration out on others. Thomas, a childhood friend of Shaw’s, is well educated and has not been exposed to harsh reality of the slavery scene.

The novel starts with a preamble that actually pace sets the panorama for the proceeding actions and is split into two sections. The first section defines two different kinds of armies. They are armies of Northern Virginia that are headed by Robert Lee and managed to go through Potomac which was located at Williamsport and attacked the Northern areas. All this occurred in the year 1863. The major objective of the attack was to dare the Union army into a war and defeat it. Towards the end of June that year, the Potomac army and Union army that had at least eighty thousand men decided to advance northward on the heels of the rebels who had somehow stopped at Gettysburg. In the next section, a description of the main characters is done. On the confederate side, Robert Edward Lee, James Longstreet, George Pinkett, Richard Ewell, Ambrose Power Hill, Lewis Armistead, Richard Brooke Garnett, J.E.B. Stuart, Jubal Early are mentioned. On the union side, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, John Buford, John Reynolds, George Gordon Meade, Winfield Scott Hancock are also named.
In Joseph Plumb Martin’s account of his experiences in the Revolutionary War he offers unique insight into the perspective of a regular soldier, which differs from the views of generals and leaders such as popular characters like George Washington. Martin’s narrative is an asset to historical scholarship as a primary source that gives an in-depth look at how life in the army was for many young men during the War for Independence. He described the tremendous suffering he experienced like starvation and privation. He did not shy away from describing his criticism of the government who he believes did not adequately care for the soldiers during and after the war. While he may be biased because of his personal involvement as a soldier, he seems to relate accounts that are plausible without embellishment or self-aggrandizement. Overall, “A Narrative of A Revolutionary Soldier” is a rich source of information providing an overview of military experience during the war.
To illustrate, according to Churchill, it indicates the worst side of World War I as how it was the most damaging and cruel war of humanity because it was global and wounded most people. Moreover, it confused the thought of how the war started, who was responsible for the war, and how it ended up, and no one still got a right answer, but the previous war was not cruel that kill most of the people around the world. It was well known who started the war and whose fault it was. Also, Generals in WWI were not participating directly with their soldiers and were sitting far from the wars with having information through telephones. Therefore, they had less effects on their soldiers, and the armies did not get encouragement from their Generals as in the previous wars had, such as the physical battle of Hannibal and Caesar, Turenne and Marlborough, Frederick and Napoleon. Another point of view in the essay is that Generals as Napoleon have hard work to do in order to attack a place. For instance, they should organize their armies, have better tactics and plans, know how to defeat themselves, know the right time of attacking, and make big decisions. Hence, it is the deal of thousands of men’ life including the General himself in the previous wars, but the World War I was only the armies and citizens as well were the victims, so Generals were disappearing. Parker specializes in military history concerning the early modern period in Europe, along with interest in the military revolution of that period. The townspeople then surround the townhouse where the kings money was lodged threatening to kill the troops with clubs. He then received information the mobs of people have declared to murder the troop by taking him away from his post. The story leads up to the summer of 1863, during which the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment led an unsuccessful attack on the Confederate’s Fort Wagner in South Carolina. The 54th regiment was the Nation's first black regiment and because of their skill, courage, and determination, they were credited with paving the way for the successful entry of other black soldiers into the ranks of the Union. In addition, these brave men demonstrated that black men were willing to fight and die both for their country and for their freedom. The setting was primarily outdoors and on the battle
