Minorities deal with injustice every day. Can America learn from what they have done to cause minority to go through so much suffer? How can society be helped with systemic racism? To help solve the problem systemic racism teachers should educate the youth on historical events that shows minorities perspectives.
Not everyone would agree on the method to educate the youth like that. Some people might argue that to teach the youth about systemic racism from the perspective of minorities would be to teach them the bad behaviors. The Ferguson case is used in certain classroom to talk about the results of the case. But, to have a better understanding of the case, there needs to be a way to analyze the way the case was handled. Until a person experiences or sees how institutional racism happens, there won’t be an understanding of who or what it affects. To be the ones that “suffer from institutional racism” (Nesbit) is to go through a process that is brutal. Michael Brown was an 18-year-old African American man who was unarmed when he got shot by Police officer Darren Wilson. Darren Wilson was not charged due to the jury’s decision to clear him of the charges. The decision made by the jury caused a massive violent protest across the country. But the main cause of the Ferguson case was more on our societies “persistent systemic inequalities” (Powell). The reason for the protest was to voice out on who would protect the African American community from police or malice actions. The voices are of those who are a part of the “minority” group that wants society to face the consequences from every aspect of systemic failure(Powell). Understand that it’s not easy to be heard as a minority if they do not voice out and to have a child understand that means that they will listen. The youth will be the ears they need to be able to make a dent in society and change it. Systemic racism is a piece in society that could be changed and people refuse to do anything about it. There are many obstacles minorities experience such as: being judged based on race, stereotyped, or worst being discriminated against by peers. Sadly, minorities can’t seem to escape to harsh realities society created. Citizens in the white society categorize humans by their race to socially construct the achievements and legitimate political goals. Following the shooting of Trayvon Martin, I began to understand the effect that systemic racism could have on the lives of Black people, and how it had already been affecting me.
As a freshman at Cal-State Fullerton I began to ask my self where inequalities come from and what causes them, why does society use the term minorities and why minorities are oppress. While working at the Volunteer & Service Center I was invited to join a group that plan an event called the Social Justice Summit. This event was a grassroots event that helped raise awareness about different inequalities and oppressions in the community to over 500 community members. With this event, I understood that there isn’t one solid answer that exists about what causes inequalities and oppressions. And even now, the only thing that is clear is that people need to know what is happening in the world. This is why I want to continue my education in the field of Ethnic Studies. Specifically I want to find out the struggles of the Chicano/a population. Find out about pass movements and what we can learn about those movements, what we can improve about those movements, to help the Chicano population today.
The American society, more so, the victims and the government have assumed that racism in education is an obvious issue and no lasting solution that can curb the habit. On the contrary, this is a matter of concern in the modern era that attracts the concern of the government and the victims of African-Americans. Considering that all humans deserve the right to equal education. The theme of the research is to discover why there is such a vast educational gap between minority and Caucasian students. Many American are unaware that such an educational gap actually exists among today’s students. This article informs us of alarming statics, such as of African American students representing a majority of the special education population, despite only making up roughly 40% of the student population. It also breaks down key events that contributed to the poor education that minority children are currently receiving. For example, in the past, it was illegal to educate African Americans and when it became legal to blacks were treated as second class students. They were segregated from their white counter parts and given hand-me-down textbooks. This article also discusses others factors that contributed to the poor education of minority students such as moral principles, socio-political, and economic stat. Despite the amount of time that has past, today’s schools are similar to the past. Minority children are still in second-rate learning environments while white students enjoy the comforts of first class school buildings and textbooks. In summary, the theme of this article was to bring attention to the educational gap among African-American, Latino, Asian, and other non-white students.

African Americans are still facing segregation today that was thought to have ended many years ago. Brown v. Board of Education declared the decision of having separate schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. As Brown v. Board of Education launches its case, we see how it sets the infrastructure to end racial segregation in all public spaces. Today, Brown v. Board of Education has made changes to our educational system and democracy, but hasn’t succeeded to end racial segregation due to the cases still being seen today. Brown v. Board of Education to this day remains one of the most important cases that African Americans have brought to the surface for the good of the United States. Brown v. Board of Education didn’t just focus on children and education, it also focused on how important equality is even when society claimed that African Americans were treated equal, when they weren’t. This was the case that opened the eyes of many American’s to notice that the separate but equal strategy was in fact unlawful.
I personally believe that if we taught African American history, and integrated a more inclusive curriculum, that children would learn the equal importance of colored people at an early age, and therefore be less likely to discriminate against them when they grow older. Another potential solution could be, creating interracial relationships, or developing a learning environment that forces students to mingle and cooperate with previously discriminated students so as to prevent the development of a false idea of who colored people really are. Based on the precedented case Plessy v. Ferguson, the court took into consideration that the “separate but equal” conditions of schools deprived African-Americans of the equal protection of the Fourteenth Amendment. Therefore, Plessy v. Ferguson would be inapplicable to public education. The court ultimately found the segregation of children in public schools based on race, even though the physical facilities and other "tangible" factors may be equal, deprived the children of the minority group of equal educational opportunities. In my opinion, the ruling was considered just at the time, although I may feel as if more could have been done to fully eliminate segregation as this ruling only ruled on public education. I think that it was important to recognize that detrimental effect of segregation on the African-American children. White supremacy stems from inferiority. Plessy v. For my summary, I am writing to teachers who will relay information back to high school students through the addition of racism to their cirriculum. My purpose is to convince the teachers that racial identity is a crucial topic that high school students need to be more aware of. The advantage of informing high school students of the role that racism plays throughout society is to assist the students in being less racist and treating non-whites fair. My third grade teacher taught us basic events in American history and put a heavy emphasis on the sufferings of black people. Our curriculum required teachers to teach us about races. We were conditioned to become racially conscious, and in the process we became subconsciously more racist. I remember seeing more Asians grouped together starting fourth grade. Kids who were innocently playing in an integrated fashion a year before started separating themselves into racial groups a year later. I remember hearing an Asian girl saying that she couldn’t have a crush on a certain guy because he’s black. I started noticing that very few Asians had black friends after race was introduced. Our school introduced us to race, but they never taught us how to overcome it. White, Asian, and Hispanic children started to mentally think of themselves as superior to blacks as a result of what we have learned in class. Diversity, we define this term today as one of our nation’s most dynamic characteristics in American history. The United States thrives through the means of diversity. However, diversity has not always been a positive component in America; in fact, it took many years for our nation to become accustomed to this broad variety of mixed cultures and social groups. One of the leading groups that were most commonly affected by this, were African American citizens, who were victimized because of their color and race. It wasn’t easy being an African American, back then they had to fight in order to achieve where they are today, from slavery and discrimination, there was a very slim chance of hope for freedom or even citizenship. This longing for hope began to shift around the 1950’s during the Civil Rights Movement, where discrimination still took place yet, it is the time when African Americans started to defend their rights and honor to become freemen like every other citizen of the United States. African Americans were beginning to gain recognition after the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, which declared all people born natural in the United States and included the slaves that were previously declared free. However, this didn’t prevent the people from disputing against the constitutional law, especially the people in the South who continued to retaliate against African Americans and the idea of integration in white schools. Integration in white schools played a major role in the battle for Civil Rights in the South, upon the coming of independence for all African American people in the United States after a series of tribulations and loss of hope.
I believe this is a very relevant topic today since prejudice and discrimination has become the leading issue of violence. The goal of this type of education is to teach the students that they have worth and can learn. It is a very positive subject matter when considering the benefits of implementing this type of education into a school system. This type of education encourages students of a diverse background to have a positive self-identity, pride in their heritage, accept others with diverse backgrounds, and promote social justice against prejudice and discrimination. Teachers can change the conversation in their classrooms by adding spontaneous and relevant content to their curriculum that both promotes multiculturalism and connects with the students. I believe a big part of making a change in our society today is by ‘changing the conversation’ whether that is about discrimination or another important issue.
