Religion is an important factor in many lives in today’s society. A particular western religion that is taken very seriously by many is known as Islam. Essentially, Islam means “submission”, or in other words a person is to abide by God and peace will follow. In order to comprehend the Islamic religion, it is consequential to view the major themes associated with this religion. By going through the central themes of Islam it could help others comprehend what is involved with this specific religion.
For my paper I decided to choose the religion of Islam. I decided to pick this religion because of its fast growing rate. It is also different from what I am used to growing up with, so I was interested in learning more. I had learned some basic facts after the 9/11 event, but the Muslim religion and culture was still a mystery to me. Picking this topic has helped me learn more about Muslims and will help me better relate to them in my future work.
The Qur’an is believe to the ultimate source of God by many Muslim believers. It contains 114 suras for the believers as the core practices of the Islamic religion and Muslims throughout the world recites its verses (Chang, Lecture. 1/21/14). They believed the prophet of Allah was Muhammad, who received the words of Allah through Angel Gabriel, and was passed on with the Qur’an during Ramadan. Angel Gabriel one night came to Muhammad “in clear human form” (“Scripture and Tradition in Islam- The Qur’an and Hadith” 104), and gave the messages from Allah to him. From the establishment of the Qur’an, Muslims have viewed the book as the last revelation of their god Allah, and thus are the true words from God for their ways of life and in reaching Allah in their afterlife. The book also teaches “mankind’s responsibility assigned by God” (Gordon 115). Therefore, Muslims practices in ways to prove their devotion towards the new religion of Islam by being faithful, and performing religious practices.
This is an updated summary of the faith of Islam. Elmasry iterates the importance of what would be called in the Christian church a "layman." He emphasizes the importance of the common man.
The religion that most Muslims believe in is Islamic, a religion where they believe that there is only one God, Allah; the Arabic word for god (dictionary, 2014). This religion is to be the second largest religion in the world with 1 billion followers (BBC, 2014). Just like Christians or Catholic, Muslims have book of laws like The Bible, it is called the Qur’an but they also have the Sunnah. These two books are the basis of the practice and beliefs of Islam. The Sunnah is the traditional part of the Muslim law that is based on the words and acts of Muhammad, and preserved into the traditional literature (dictionary, 2014). Muhammad was the person who first founded the religion of Islam, which is accepted by Muslims across the world as the last of the prophets of God (Britannia). Also, within the Sunnah is the five basic Pillars of Islam. These are the most important practices of the religion because it is the obligations that every Muslim must they must be satisfied with in order to live a good and responsible life; according to Islam (BBC, 2014). The five pillars consist of Shahadah, Salat,Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj. The Shahadah is when they recite the Muslim profession of faith, the Salat is when perf...
To us in the South, when we think of religion, most people generally think of Christianity. Though that is the religion we know best, we only know it best because we live in the Bible Belt of the World and there is a church on every corner. When people in the South hear the term Islam or Muslim, a follower of Islam, their minds almost always will turn to radicalism. Contrary to popular belief, not all followers of Islam are dangerous or a threat to society, in fact, some of the nicest people you will ever meet are followers of Islam. Christianity and Islam are two similar set of beliefs for example, both have an iconic set of rules, both have sacred texts, and both believe in Jesus Christ. While both Christianity and Islam are similar,
Islam and Christianity
There are hundreds of religions in this world. Of them two are the most prominent. Islam and Christianity. It is averaged that there are 750 million people practicing Islam, and another 1 billion practicing Christianity. The start of Islam is actually derived form Christianity, history books indicates that one night in the year 610, the first of many revelations came to Muhammad from God by way of the angel Gabriel (In Christianity this is the same Angel which brings the news of Jesus' birth, Jesus of course is the founder of Christianity).
The Islamic religion was crucial in the development of later Muslim based societies because of the 5 pillars of Islam, the main beliefs. The five pillars of Islam are Shahada: Faith, Salat: Prayer, Sawm: Fasting, Zakat: almsgiving, and Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca which outline the duties necessary to be worthy in the eyes of Allah. In Shahada, Muslims believe in a total declaration of their faith to the only god Allah. To worship Allah, Muslims pray 5 times a day at dawn, noon, afternoon, evening, and night facing the Kaaba of Mecca which is a crucial aspect of their prayer. Muslims also fast to worship Allah during the month of Ramadan which is an obligatory action once hitting adulthood, puberty. Followers of the Islamic religion are obliged to the 4th pillar of zakat or alms giving if they are able to do so. Zakat as seen as a way to purify yourself and allow for growth in your spiritual life. Finally the final pillar of Islam is Hajj or the pilgrimage to Mecca. The pilgrimage is one of the most iconic of the five pi...
Islam: A Religion and Culture
Islam is one of the oldest religions in history dating back to about 600 AD. It began when a man named Muhammad heard a voice from the heavens instructing him to proclaim the word of god. Currently there are over 800 million followers of the Muslim religion. The main text of the religion is the Quran which is said to be the word of God, or Allah as called in Muslim. Within the Quran, The five pillars of Islam are proclaimed along with many other concepts very unique to the Muslim religion.
While some Islamic extremists have given the Muslim culture and the Arab world a “bad name”, this chapter has taught me many things about the religion. For example, just like “our” Christian religion, the Muslims too believe that Allah, like our God, is “all powerful, all seeing, and all merciful” (Sayre). The Muslim religion is very similar to Christianity. Christians believe in one and only God, and believe that God created Heaven and Earth. Muslims also believe that because their God, Allah created the universe, which then makes the universe “good and beautiful” (Sayre). Muslims also believe that there is only one God, which they call Allah. According the the Qur’an, being at one with nature is similar to being at one with God. Similar to Christianity, the Muslims and Islam believe that human beings have an eternal soul that can live forever in heaven if they surrender themselves to Allah and accept him as their one (and only) God.
