Learning Style and Strategies Science and technology have made learning easier than in the past. People use technology such as YouTube and google to learn. Everyone has their unique style of learning. According to Romanelli et al. (2009) “ the definition of “learning styles” is “characteristic cognitive, effective, and psychosocial behaviors that serve as relatively stable indicators of how learners perceive, interact with, and respond to the learning environment” ( para. 3). These are four sensory approach of learning style. According to the VARK’s learning style, the individual’s learning style was visual 43%, kinesthetic 25%, aural 18%, and reading/writing 14%. Learning is multi-dimensional, there isn’t one specific way of learning. Now a days educators use strategies based on research evidence to teach their students. “Awareness of individual learning styles among first year MBBS students and the use of an externally regulated strategy for enhancing learning helped students adapt to other learning strategies. This enhanced the use of better learning practices and, therefore, better learning outcomes” (Bhagat, Vyas, & Singh, 2015, para. 41). The teaching style has change from teacher centered learning to a student centered learning. Students who are aware of their learning strategy are found to be doing better in study because they were able to utilize their learning strategy and also other learning strategies. According to the VARK questionnaire, I possess a multimodal learning style. Being a multimodal learner is advantageous, as it allows the learner to adapt their style to each learning situation (Robertson, Smellie, Wilson, & Cox, 2011). The results further displayed that I am primarily a kinesthetic, but also a visual learner. These two distinct learning styles have much in common with cognitivist and constructivist learning theories.

Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.

The learning style I am categorized according to VARK is the Kinesthetic learning style. In this particular learning style in order to internalize information one has to use all their senses like the sense of sight, touch and feeling, taste by the taste buds, smell and hearing. The Kinesthetic learners even like to work in the laboratories doing experiments, like field trips love tours and prefer receiving examples of different kinds including principles of laws and like real –life examples. These learners believe in applications and like hands on experiences and approaches to learn new concepts and information. They also enjoy the trial and error methods to come to conclusions and also like collection of rock types, plants, shells, flowers, grasses and other interesting things in the nature. They are also interested in exhibitions of different kinds, samples of products and photographs of information to be learned. Kinesthetic learners also use recipes, find solutions to problems and like to refer to previous exam papers. They have a good memory to remember real life experiences and real things that happened. They also learn from talking about their notes with another kinesthetic person by using pictures, photographs and illustrate their ideas. They recollect experiments and field trips and the outcome of all these learning experiences enable them to perform well in tests, assignments and also in examinations.
To determine the best way I learn, I carried out two different learning styles questionnaires online. One may find that they are not always categorised in a specific type rather they may have more than one learning preference. Firstly, the most commonly used Neil Fleming’s VARK model. Fleming believes that there are four different types of learner: Visual, Auditory, Reading/writing and Kinesthetic learners. The second model I tried out was Soloman-Felder Learning Styles and Strategies.
In this essay I will be describing various types of learning styles and stating the advantages and disadvantages of these learning styles. I will also inform you of the most commonly used method of finding out your own learning style, and I will inform you of the man who made this method. Finally, I will write about my own preferred learning styles and the strengths and weaknesses of the different learning styles.
