The Purpose of Thornbury Castle Thornbury castle Since Thornbury castle started being built in 1511 it has been in the centre of a debate with historians whether it is a castle built for defence or a luxurious palace for show. When I went to Thornbury castle you can see lots of different features that would confuse you in deciding what Thornbury castle was built for. There are lots of different features showing both. This picture shows some arrow slits. As you walk around the castle you see things like arrow slits and gun loops in the walls showing they were probably built in case of an attack. Around the outer and inner gateway walls there are portcullis grooves which were never finished if it had have been the walls would have been as high again this is because there is nowhere for the gates to go. Around the castle towers there should have been crenellations which you can see on the only finished tower the crenellations which are the thing around the top are used to shoot between the gaps and hide in the higher bits. Underneath the crenellations there are machicolations which were used to pour thing though (e.g. red hot oil or stones) to hit invaders below. The finished tower showing the machicolations Around some of the outside walls shows ditches which may have been the start of a moat or other people think it many have been a ha-ha. 'The stream to the west of the building was broadened into a moat' This statement is by A D K Hawkyard. 'There cummithe an armelet of severne ebbynage and flowing into this parke. Duke Edward had thowght to have trenchyd there, and to have browght it ... ... middle of paper ... ...ngland. Also if you were building a castle for the purpose of serious defence then you wouldn't build it next to the church making an obvious weakness. In contrast to that some historians though believe that Thornbury was the 'Last genuine castle' "The last English castle to be built with a serious purpose of defence" This quote was written by W. Douglas-Simpson I don't agree with this because buildings like Deal castle were built after Thornbury started being built in the 1540's and this fort was built by Henry VIII were built in case of possible intrusions of other European powers faithful to Rome after Henry turned his back on the catholic religion. After looking at whether Thornbury castle was built as a palace or a castle for defence I have decided that Thornbury castle was built as a palace.
Castleton is a small village located in the western end of Hope Valley, in the Derbyshire Peak District National Park. Three sides of Castleton are surrounded by steep hills such as Mam Tor which is two miles from the north west of the village. Castleton was named after Peveril Castle, which overlooks the village, and has origins dating back to the Norman times. The village was once surrounded by a moat, but it has dried up now. Castleton is a honeypot village. This means that it is a tourist destination and is likely to draw in visitors from surrounding areas. There are many reasons why Castleton has become a honeypot. Three are many hills surrounding Castleton which are a great place for walkers and hikers. Furthermore, there are four underground show caves in Castleton which allow tourists to learn more about how the minerals and
A typical feature of a concentric castle is the protective wood work at the top of the walls. We cannot tell whether this was a feature of Portchester Castle because any evidence would have rotted away.
Towers extend from each of the four corners. Exterior walls enclose the premises. The walls were clearly built for defensive purposes with towers on each corner. The tower of London exists, with some later modifications, till this
Australia has the terrible condition of having an essentially pointless and prefabricated idea of “Aussiness” that really has no relation to our real culture or the way in which we really see ourselves. We, however subscribe to these stereotypes when trying to find some expression of our Australian identity. The feature film, The Castle, deals with issues about Australian identity in the 1990’s. The film uses techniques like camera shots, language and the use of narration to develop conflict between a decent, old fashioned suburban family, the Kerrigans and an unscrupulous corporation called Airlink. Feature films like The Castle are cultural products because they use attitudes, values and stereotypes about what it means to be Australian.
Wales has long been known as a country of myth and magic. She hides her secrets in her hollow hills. Pen Y Bryn, The Princes’ Tower is the latest treasure that has come to light and one of the most fascinating. In 1992 Kathryn and Brian Pritchard Gibson bought what they believed to be a thirty-six acre chicken farm with a 17th century Elizabethan manor house and it has changed their lives dramatically. The stone manor and out buildings are nestled against a forested hill in Snowdonia. It is just north of Bangor above the shores of Abergwyngregyn, ‘the mouth of the white shell river’ overlooking the Menai Straights with the mountains forming a protective backdrop behind. Kathryn Gibson says, The locals, it seems, have always called the house Twr Llewelyn, or Llewelyn’s Tower. They told us that’s where the princes lived and that below it there’s a Roman settlement and a bronze age fort. When asked how they came by this knowledge they always answered, "Nain (Grandmother) told me." It was only the academics who ignored this local lore that had been handed down for centuries.
The novel We Have Always Lived in The Castle by Shirley Jackson is a very unique book. This is due to the very strange behavioral patterns from the two sisters, Merricat and Constance, in the poem. But what is the most unusual about the two sisters is their definitions of happiness. To see Merricat’s definition of happiness is best seen when she refers to the “moon” and under the same weekly routine schedule she has always been under since she her family was murdered. Constance’s definition of happiness clearly displayed when Charles comes to the house and when she starts embracing Merricat’s “moon” fantasy world. By looking at the two girls’ definition of happiness we can see what the girls truly need and want in order to be happy.
The comment given by Mark Girouard is ‘Hardwick hall is a non-courtyard house with loggias that it unlike most Elizabethan examples in that their openings are not arched, it’s massive cylindrical columns, of simple but effective design, support a horizontal entablature.’ The example to show that as the stonework shows, they were originally planned to run right round the house between the towers, making its plan at ground level a simple rectangle. In connection with many Elizabethan examples, which has external loggias on each of its four facades but at Hardwick the side loggias were never built.
Old styles of fortifications became easily destroyed by newly invented canons and were eventually replaced by star-forts. Star forts started in Italy, and then spread throughout Europe and other parts of the world. It was significant because it wasn’t easily destroyed by most cannons, and it could be easily defended against waves of infantry attacks. They are called star forts because the bird-eye view was that of a star, which allowed at least two points to have visual contact with attacking infantry, no matter the

‘The Castle’ is a film about Darryl Kerrigan and his family, who have their house mandatorily acquired by an airline and government coalition to use his land to expand an airport, but try to fight it through the legal system. The film portrays power in many different forms, such as family power, the power of the state and government institutions over the individual, and the power of an experienced, prestigious lawyer compared to that of a small-time, unknown one.
The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, serves as the meeting place for the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Old Palace was a medieval building that was destroyed by fire in 1834. After the fire, a competition was held for architects to submit plans for the new building that should be in a Gothic or Elizabethan style hoping to embody the conservative values of England. A Royal commission chose Charles Barry’s designs for a Perpendicular Gothic palace. Barry’s own style was more classical than Gothic, which is why Augustus Pugin’s involvement was so crucial in Barry winning the competition.
I agree with author, Jason Reynolds, purpose in writing this novel. The message he tries to send through this book is a beautifully written, and heartfelt lesson to any age of reader who picks up the story of Ghost. In his novel Castle Cranshaw learns to come out on top over his own fears through many eye-opening challenges along the way. He learns to apologize for his mistakes and forgive the people in his past. Most of all he tames the anger inside of him and becomes a better person because of it. Castle became aware of himself and the others around him. Jason Reynolds wrote an amazing book with an inspirational message that any age can understand.
They are described as walking down a narrow path, between the city’s castle walls, or ramparts, and the
The first castles built (Motte and Bailey) were made of wood and quick to build, but they were burnt and worn down easily, so the next castles were made of stone. (Square keeps) They were tall, strong, large and lasted long, but attackers would surround the castle and wait for ages for the people inside to come out. The third castles (Shell Keeps) were even stronger, but because they were made of heavy stone, they might collapse. So finally, the fourth castles (concentric) were built and they were the strongest, largest most defensive and most expensive castles built.
With the need for war came the need for protection. Castles surrounded the king for his protection against enemies. In addition,...
