Education is a very broad term that can be interpreted in an infinite number of ways. Nonetheless, despite one's definition of education, it can be said that education does in fact have some sort of a purpose or goal. Personally, I feel that education has become important in our world for all individuals, yet at the same time I believe that education has different purposes depending on the grade level.

What is the purpose of education? Is education about preparing students for a specific career or is it about teaching students lifelong values, discipline, and the ability to explore new ideas and to think independently? There have been several goals of education over the years. Some included preparing children for citizenship, to prepare for the skilled workforce, to teach literacy, to help students become critical thinkers and to help students compete in a global marketplace. I believe that for the 21st century , the purpose of education is to prepare children to compete in the global environment.
Literacy is most commonly understood as reading and writing. But before children can read and write, they need to learn about sound, words, language, books and stories (Raising Children, 2015). Children begin to develop and gain knowledge quite differently and with support and developmentally appropriate learning skills children will also come to understand the connection between letters and sounds. Literacy development or early literacy is the most essential in the first three years of life as it the earliest experience children have with language, sound and the positive interactions between child and adult. As an educator, you easily find yourself with the feeling that you are working in isolation. Working from within your classroom, unsure of what, how or why your colleagues are working. Being able to have an opportunity to step back and critically reflect on yourself is essential if you are to continue to grow within the profession. What are the ‘big ideas’ in education? Who has a greater impact on schooling, the students and their learning needs or state and the policies in which they develop? Do we ever ask ourselves what is the purpose of schooling? Why is the system set up in the way that it is? What role has history played in the development of education systems? This course has encouraged me to reflect on my own beliefs about education. Therefore I feel that the natural place for me to begin to further my understanding of education, is be examining and analyzing the purposes of schooling.
Reading is a complex process that’s difficult to explain linearly. A student’s reading capabilities begin development long before entering the school setting and largely start with exposure (Solley, 2014). The first remnants of what children are able to do in terms of reading are built from their parents and other people and object around them as they’re read to, spoken to, and taken from place to place to see new things (Solley, 2014). As kids are exposed to more and more their noises quickly turn into intentional comprehensible messages and their scribbling begins to take the form of legible text as they attempt to mimic the language(s) they’re exposed to daily.
In this week’s reading, the focus was on how children learn to read and ways in which teachers can support their skills. In early childhood, learning how to read sets the foundation for their future endeavors so it is important to help them gain the skills they need. It was mentioned how the role of the teacher’s is to provide students with many opportunities to do so through planned lessons and interactive activities. Also that children learn through reading processes that involves decoding and comprehension. It was also stressed that fluency, which is sometimes overlooked, is actually a very essential skill for students to have because it allows them to become advanced readers by being able to focus more on the meaning of readings.
When teaching literacy instruction is inevitable to teach in different ways, one because according the grade level children learn different things and two because as they go through the grades they need new knowledge. In kindergarten children are starting to learn in a different way than preschool, meaning that there is more instruction and they are learning the convections of reading and writing. During this year students will have to understand several concepts such as how a book goes from top to bottom, or left to right, writing words and even compared letters. They will have to recognize the alphabet letters know the letter sounds and even write their first and last names correctly. In order for all of these to happen instruction will be based on interactive read-a-louds in order to teach listening strategies, the teacher will read books aloud to children and ask question, as well as make students think critically. The National Curriculum Framework 2005 includes the section Learning to Read and Write under the head Language and thus it is important to analyze briefly how early literacy as a part of language education in schools has been dealt with in the NCF. It says that speech, listening, reading and writing are the four communicative skills (NCF, 2005, p.40) essential for children to succeed in school. An education is something that one can keep for a lifetime. Acquiring a good education can affect one’s personal life, one’s community, and one’s entire generation.
After twelve years of school, it took me until now to figure out exactly why I had been there all those years. It was not to torture me by making me learn how to spell but to make sure that my classmates and I got the opportunity to make the most of ourselves. Opportunity that would come from learning as much as possible from books and beginning to see that the world focuses on more than just history and English . I owe my success in life and school to teachers who taught me to spell and to be respectful and responsible. Those quick to argue with me say that school's usefulness is shallow: deeper-real-life experiences truly educate a person. School should be seen not only as a place to study, but also as a place to learn about real life. People cannot depend on experience alone for education just as they cannot solely rely on information from school books to prepare them for life. The lessons, whether from a book or not, learned in school transcend the classroom to real life situations.
Education plays a vital role in shaping tomorrows’ leaders. Not only can we become a better nation by acquiring the skills necessary to be productive members of a civilized society. There is no one single definition for what education really is. Experts and scholars from the beginning have viewed and commented about education in different ways. The definition mostly agreed upon was that education is an acquisition or passing of skills, behavior or knowledge from an institution to another.
