The Purpose of Education Going through my years of education, often I have wondered what the points of many of my classes have been. Now, as I prepare to enter the field of teaching, I again am evaluating why we need to educate children. I believe that some of the main purposes of education, other than the obvious purpose of acquiring knowledge, are to teach our culture, to develop social skills, to refine the use of our language, and to develop problem solving skills and logical reasoning. These are all important parts of our everyday life that are conveyed through the many things we accomplish throughout our education. Learning culture through education is an important part of our learning experiences. Before a child goes to school, they are only introduced to culture that their family is a part of. Going to school you see the general norms that are accepted, not just in schools, but in the working world as well as everyday life outside of the home. While some children may be the center of attention constantly in their home, in school they learn that they cannot always be everyone’s main focus all the time. It also teaches children responsibility and that if they do not do what is asked of them, there will be consequences. The values, beliefs that teachers has developed from her/his past experiences has an influence on how and what they teach the children , so teachers should try not to let their personal views interfere with their teaching .Language is the way we communicate with one another around us, only through language we are able to convey verbal messages across. As teacher we need to have that openness, so that we can value the differences and make the families and children belonged at centres.
What is the purpose of education? A question that has been asked for centuries and defined in many ways; each theorist will argue their views on education is unsurpassed, yet it remains a question, that the future of our children depends upon. My personal philosophy of education is to create an environment that allows every child the freedom and ability to discover, create and pursue their interests; ultimately becoming the best they can, for an evolving and unpredictable future. Within this framework, the purpose being to encourage learning through children’s interests, by personalising education for the individual and interlacing subjects to engage and entice learning. While discussing my personal philosophy of education, I will explain the aim of education, consider the role of the teacher and the learner and present effective teaching methods and practices for within the classroom.
