Increased funding has also been shown to reduce the limits put on researchers, providing them with not only the ability to make revolutionary discoveries, but to further intellectual pursuit for the sake of learning. Due to provincial funding freezes and cuts, universities are relying more and more on the financial contribution of their students to fund day-to-day operations, along with long-term plans. This move away from provincial funding is only growing, with the proportion of university operating revenues declining from 84% to 58% between the years of 1979 and 2009, while the average Canadian universities’ tuition based revenues have sky rocketed from 12% to 35% . This is problematic for a number of reasons, including the tuition freezes that have been put in place by several of the Canadian provinces. The skyrocketing price of college tuition is causing a tremendous concern over whether higher education will be a viable financial concept to the average citizen over the next decades. Some families have opted to explore different means of obtaining a higher education for their children as these costs escalate. There is overwhelming evidence that colleges need to restructure the way they are run because tuition prices are increasing at a rapid rate causing changes in the way students fund their education and in the way the government provides educational subsidies.
Making basic education available provides the conditions for a well-informed population so that we can maintain a society comprised of individuals who have the basic skills required to join the labor force. In particular, an education that provides skills to serve the labor market is vital for individuals, the economy and our society. In addition to a discriminatory job market and unrealistic expectations, the youth of today also has to deal with an education system that is in many respects inadequate. Tuition in Canada has nearly quadrupled in the past twenty years (Deschamps 2015), vastly outpacing the amount of inflation over the same time period. This has led to an increasing amount of recent graduates being in debt and unable to find a job. On top of that, universities have not changed very much over the past thirty years, despite the job market changing drastically over the same time span. This has led to a growing disconnect between universities programs and available jobs (Kawaguchi & Murao 2014). As a result, universities today are preparing the population for
...order to get better jobs and earn more money, to get to the good life, yet influenced by what colleges want them to learn and what employers want them to know: these all may or may not be the same thing. What employers want out of college graduates is also based on money: who can do the job the fastest and best, who can save or make money for the business. What is clear is that the university or college which is purely a "meeting of the minds," a place for people to gather and learn for the sake of learning, seems to be becoming a thing of the past. It is being replaced by an increasingly commercialized system of higher education: one that costs more and more each year--with the cost rising much faster than the rate of household incomes, and one that is being altered by the needs of an increasingly diverse student population and the needs of the business world.
