The basis of our knowledge is learned from the time spent in a classroom. Knowledge is educated information pounded in our minds from the earliest age of comprehension. America has drastically changed the methods in which we educate the young minds of the generations over time. The public education is greatly impacted by the effects of corporate America. By definition, corporate America is the world of big businesses, essentially located in the United States. Michael Moore, author of “Idiot Nation”, describes the outcomes of our corporate America on the public education system. The first being finances and closely following is the career opportunities brought throughout the partnership found between the company and the specific institution. Not only do companies sponsor particular field trips to the corporate headquarters or factory, they also organize other field trips for students to attend. Students enjoy being able to tour places, whether that is a museum, factory, corporate headquarters, nature centers, etc. If a student is asked what their favorite part of school was, they will 9 times out of 10 respond by saying some form of field trip. Where would our schools and our students be if corporate America didn’t leave their footprint? Corporate America allowed for those in the educational system to have a chance to see what the real world was like and have a little fun in the end. Gatto speaks of a man who broke down the purpose of schooling, according to him, into six basic functions. These functions were created by Alexander Inglis. Gatto himself claims that if one were to “innocently” believe in his three goals of education, one would follow those functions designed by Inglis. Inglis breaks down schooling as: adjustive or adaptive, intergrading, diagnostic and directive, differentiating, selective, and lastly propaedeutic functions. Gatto explains, “That, unfortunately, is purpose of mandatory public education in this country” (Gatto 147).
