Recent technological innovations have allowed for our civilization to enjoy an age of superior entertainment, more people have command over how, when, and why they access entertainment. This special access that we have gained has changed many industries in the business, such as the music industry. It is necessary that this change positively influence both the consumer and producer of the music. That is why music should be free to purchase because the free and easy to obtain abundance of music will enable the artists of the music to sell more merchandise and sell out more concerts, not to mention an increase in music quality and the elimination of music piracy. The ardent question is how will the artists make money from free music? Free music will force the artist to focus on the quality of his or her music since that artist will not gain revenue from selling albums and songs. Thus, making the artist rely on his or her creative skills to gain popularity. In which case the supporters will primarily support the more popular artists by purchasing artist-related merchandise. Buying a favorite artists shirt is a tradition for some, and just a plain necessity for others (Knopper, “Nine Ways Musicians Actually Make Money Today”). As more and more people begin to find that buying artist-related merchandise is the best way to support his or her favorite artist, shirt sales will begin to become a yearly maybe even a monthly tradition for some. In addition, the artists will not deluge us with albums since they will have no revenue incoming from music sales anyway.
