Euthanasia, good or bad? In this following article I will be exploring euthanasia in more detail, the different Christian points of view, the strengths and weaknesses of the euthanasia argument and finally my point of view on euthanasia and why I believe this. First of all, what is euthanasia? It is something that not many people think about until they or a friend or family member is put in a position where they might actually have to consider it. Euthanasia, in the dictionary, simply is: the action of ending someone’s life in a painless way. It seems pretty simple but in reality it is a lot more complicated, not only for the people involved but for the society in general as well. Overall there are four different types of euthanasia. There is passive euthanasia, where the dying person is given strong painkilling drugs but given not medical care and therefore is left to die-hopefully without pain. Then there is compulsory euthanasia, and although it is rarely performed today, it is where a person with a certain disease, such as the plague, is killed to relieve them of their pains and also to stop the disease spreading further. Next is involuntary euthanasia where, for example, a person in a coma or a person who is brain dead is given euthanasia because they have no quality of life or that their life has no value. It is called involuntary euthanasia as a family member can request that euthanasia is performed because the ill person cannot. The last type of euthanasia, and the most difficult to understand and to regulate, is voluntary euthanasia-where a person, say with a terminal illness or who is very old, asks for euthanasia to be performed to end their life earlier so that they will not be in so much pain. Because eut... ... middle of paper ... ...e so it shouldn’t be ended with hast. However, although I am against euthanasia in most cases-I do not believe that it should not banned completely and some forms should still exist. For example, although it sounds like the harshest and the easiest form of euthanasia for somebody to take advantage of, I believe that involuntary euthanasia is right for some extreme cases. I believe this because for some families, maybe with somebody in a coma-who is unlikely to ever wake up, their only chance to live a normal and happy live is to end the life of the person in the coma. Although there is a small chance that the person will wake up-and many people believe that this is a reason why involuntary euthanasia is wrong-there is a bigger chance that they will never and if they don’t, you could say that many lives are wasted because the family are always living in limbo.
As the years go by our society advances in all fields. As a result, we as a society have come to question many elements in our lives by comparing them to longstanding morals and traditions. The medical fields has always, and probably will always, raise many controversial issues. The latest concerns whether euthanasia or physician assisted suicide should be universally legalized in the U.S. Those opposed see that there are other alternatives other than taking a person’s own life, with the help of a doctor. Not only are they essential to incorporate into the options for people experiencing terminal illnesses, legalization would allow an overall upgrade in combating abuse with this treatment, at the same time, people are thoroughly against the
Euthanasia has been a very polemic subject in American society. Its objective is to conclude the life of a person at their own request, a family member, or by the determination of a health care professional to avoid unnecessary suffering. There is a lot of moral and ethics involved in euthanasia, exist a big difference between provoke death and allow death. The first one rejects life, the second one accepts its natural end. Every single intentional act of provoke the death of a person without consent is opposed to ethics and is punishable by law. One of the biggest moral controversies in the XXI century is the fact that some people agree in the autonomy humans have to determine the moment of death. The moral and legal implications are huge and the practical benefits are also enormous. This is a touchy and controversial issue and my goal on writing this paper is to remain on favor of euthanasia. I will elaborate later on my reasons to believe and support euthanasia, but first let’s examine the historical perspective of this moral issue.
Those against it are equally worried about the victim’s situation in where their lives are taken away without their consent and at the same time, the possibility of a recovery. However, just because something is not accepted by society does not mean it is wrong, as the pro side of involuntary Euthanasia mentions, it would end with the victims’ pain by giving them a peaceful death. The reason to keep someone alive is to give him/her a new opportunity to fight for an improvement, if there no such thing the best option, although the hardest too, is to let the person rest in a better place, the positive fact about practicing Euthanasia is that the organs of the victim will save a life. On the other hand, a good effect of keeping someone alive is that the family will still see their loved one. Besides, they will save many legal problems because of Euthanasia still illegal in many countries. Both sides can agree that their cases in where their beliefs do not fit, as an example for the ones that support involuntary Euthanasia, if there a possibility to a recover they cannot kill the patient, they must keep him/her alive until the doctors said something different. In comparison, an exception for the con side that does not support involuntary
In today’s modern society the use of euthanasia and assisted suicide is a hot button topic. Due to the argumentative nature of this issue many philosophers have created their own ideas on how euthanasia and assisted suicide benefit or harm society. These philosophers such as Brock and Callahan differ in their arguments about euthanasia and assisted suicide. Like almost all the heavily opinionated topics in society there should be limits to the use thus my consensus regarding euthanasia and assisted suicide is that it should be legalized to a certain extent.
Euthanasia is defined as the act of killing someone who is terminally ill or those who are seriously injured in a reasonably painless way for reasons of compassion (Diaconescu). There are two types of administering euthanasia, which are Active and Passive euthanasia. Active euthanasia is when the medical professionals or another person intentionally does something that causes the patient to die. An example of active euthanasia is killing a patient using lethal injection. Passive euthanasia is when the patient dies because the medical professionals don't do or stops doing something to extend the patient’s life or when they stop doing something that is keeping the patient alive. An example of passive euthanasia are turning off life support machines, disconnecting fe...
For example, if a person is in a coma and the family believes that they will not revive, then the family should allow the patient to die because the patient is basically dead already. Furthermore, if someone is in really bad pain, then they should be able to choose euthanasia because they are suffering a lot. They might not want to die because they acknowledge it would make their family member sad, but on the other hand they are hurting and can only think about is the pain. That is when I strongly agree with Hooker that people should be able to choose euthanasia and that being euthanised is for the best. In my opinion, having a law permitting euthanasia is good because it means that the person can take control of their own life. It would be up to them whether they want to be euthanised or not, in both good and bad conditions. Just having the option can be beneficial to some because it is like having the freedom to choose to live or die. Therefore, If I was sick, I would like to have a law that permits me to choose euthanasia, because I could decide whether it is the best decision for me or
Euthanasia is an unnatural way to die. It is assisted suicide. ¨Shouldn’t it be called murder?¨ No because it’s the person’s way to decide if they want to die, but doctors should have regulations. They shouldn’t be euthanized if they are just depressed. They should use it if it is an incurable disease and the person is in a lot of pain and suffering. To be honest, it is illegal for a reason. If it was legal in all 50 states there would be alot of euthanizations in the united states. Its unnatural because doctors prescribe medicine for you to die. And instead of living
When we hear the phrase voluntary euthanasia people generally think of one of two things: the active termination of life at the patient's or the Nazi extermination program of murder. Many people have beliefs about whether euthanasia is right or wrong, often without being able to define it clearly. Some people take an extreme view, while many fall somewhere between the two camps. The derivation means gentle and easy death coming from the Greek words, eu - thanatos. Euthanasia was formerly called "mercy killing," euthanasia means intentionally making someone die, rather than allowing that person to die naturally. Put bluntly, euthanasia means killing in the name of compassion.
“Euthanasia is defined as a deliberate act undertaken by one person with the intention of ending life of another person to relieve that person's suffering and where the act is the cause of death.”(Gupta, Bhatnagar and Mishra) Some define it as mercy killing. Euthanasia may be voluntary, non voluntary and involuntary. When terminally ill patient consented to end his or her life, it is called voluntary euthanasia. Non voluntary euthanasia occurs when the suffering person never consented nor requested to end a life. These patients are incompetent to decide because they are either minor, in a comatose stage or have mental conditions. Involuntary euthanasia is conducted when it is against the will of the patient (Gupta, Bhatnagar, Mishra). Euthanasia can be either passive or active. Passive euthanasia means life-sustaining treatments are withheld and nothing is done to keep the patient alive. Active euthanasia occurs when a physician do something by giving drugs or substances that ends a patient’s life. (Medical News Today)
Over the course of this paper, I will give a brief history, background, and address many of the arguments that are opposed to and for euthanasia. These arguments include causation, omission, legal issues, the physicians involved, the slippery slope that might potentially be created, autonomy rights, and Christianity.
In order to provide a framework for my thesis statement on the morality of euthanasia, it is first necessary to define what euthanasia is and the different types of euthanasia. The term Euthanasia originates from the Greek term “eu”, meaning happy or good and “thanatos”, which means death, so the literal definition of the word Euthanasia can be translated to mean “good or happy death”.
Physician-Assisted Suicide is assisted suicide from a physician to a person to make it as painless and dignified as possible. There is also Euthanasia, which is to end a person life so they don’t have to go through any more pain and suffering without the patients consent. As of right now, only Montana, Oregon, Vermont and Washington have legalized Physician-Assisted suicide. To be eligible for Physician-assisted suicide, a patient must have a terminally ill disease. There are many pros and cons in this if you are having unbearable pain and want to end the suffering.
Euthanasia, according to the dictionary, means the killing of a person who is suffering from an incurable disease. Lately, it had been a huge debate over whether euthanasia should be legalized or not. Personally, I believe that euthanasia should be legalized if it is voluntary. I have three reasons for my argument.
Euthanasia is a word that comes from ancient Greece and it refers to “good death”. In the modern societies euthanasia is defined as taking away people’s lives who suffer from an incurable disease. They usually go through this process by painlessness ways to avoid the greatest pains that occurs from the disease. A huge number of countries in the World are against euthanasia and any specific type of it. One of the most important things being discussed nowadays is whether euthanasia should be legalized or not. This essay will focus on comparing positive and negative aspects of euthanasia in order to answer to the question whether euthanasia should be legal or not.
Euthanasia is a medical procedure which speeds up the process of dying for people with incurable, painful, or distressing diseases. The patient’s doctor can stop treatment and instead let them die from their illness. It come from the Greek words for 'good' and 'death', and is also called mercy killing. Euthanasia is illegal in most countries including the UK . If you suffer from an incurable disease, you cannot legally terminate your life. However, in a number of European countries it is possible to go to a clinic which will assist you to die gracefully under some very strict circumstances.
