Locke’s ideas, where Mr. Hobbes ideas of state of nature are barely practiced. During Mr. Hobbes time period he didn’t like the idea of the church having power, so he found a way for them to lose power, while changing the reasoning for having kings. His idea of state of nature was more based on an individual’s moral, where he believed everyone is greedy, selfish and pursues their own self-interest and this would lead us to have wars with one another. In his works he finds societies to be some type of social contract. Which led him to arguing that the government should have more control over people, if not there would be “war of all against all” and this would lead him to say, if we have a weak government and less control wars will breakout, which we would be killed and overthrown.
Hobbes is also not appropriate because his cynical attitude towards men is not appealing to society and the sovereign aspect is not suitable in a democratic nation. Locke proves to be the most effective in today’s government and nations across the world because we have our separation of powers to ensure that the accumulation of power in the government never occurs, and our voting system to ensure equality.
However, instead of being seen as a rolemodel, a hero or a king, to these people he was seen as a criminal. The text says, “He was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped and should be regarded as extremely dangerous.” He plays a role as a monster to these people. Since for years all they have seen in anyone is their average society, it is easy to understand why they would be scared of him. But he isn 't trying to do something bad, he hopes he is right and that differences are good.
The state didn't want these ideas and infect their citizens. Not to mention that the citizens would start thinking for themselves. They would revolt in order to get their natural rights. Like John Locke had stated: men had the natural right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Prometheus threatened to destroy their whole society with him being their leader.
Machiavelli felt that “crafty and deceitful princes have historically defeated the faithful princes”(Prince). What happened to the idea of a caring leader, one who could be trusted to make decisions that the majority of the people agreed with? I do not agree with Machiavelli that a leader should be deceitful in order to for his country to succeed or grow. I think that what a leader is depends on what type of man you are good or evil. The leader that Machiavelli describes as being the ideal one is evil.
Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau Thoreau's essay entitled "Civil Disobedience" i was an excellent way of educating the public on why people should not settle for a less than perfect government. His belief in demanding a better government was a great reminder that Thomas Jefferson insisted that it was our "duty, to throw off"(2) an unsatisfactory government in the "Declaration of Independence" ii Thoreau's essay also explained why people choose not to do anything about it. Thoreau stated that people "cannot spare the protection of the existing government, and they dread the consequences to their property and families of disobedience to it" (25). So it makes sense that most people would not be willing to risk losing their property, family, or their life. However, we should not feel this way because Jefferson also stated that "Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just power from the consent of the governed.
According to Thomas Hobbes, the reason that this is the case is because people are selfish and evil and that they must protect their interests well by using certain tactics to make sure other people devastate their needs and wants. Also, without a leader, these people would be very chaotic and attack one another of many things when there isn’t any government in charge. Thomas Hobbes also didn 't support the idea of democracy where the citizens’ are allowed to vote for their government leaders. Due to his idea that people are only trying
That is why we need conventional laws in our society, not natural laws. Also, since conventional laws are governed, they are made sure to be enforced, and breaking them will only ruin that one person for what they have done, not the society as a whole. One reason natural law can’t work in our society is because everyone has his or her own idea of what is right or wrong. Killing and stealing are both known as universally wrong deeds, but there are some laws that many people may agree with and many people may be against. This means if natural law were in place, no one would know what is right or wrong.
Our governments are designed to divide ruling power between numerous parties; in order to keep any one person from becoming all powerful. Today's society would not tolerate a king who could do as he pleases, even if he were a noble and just man. In the story, Gilgamesh's super-human strength and power are not always convenient to his subjects. "His arrogance has no bounds", and "his lust leaves no virgin to her lover," yet the people respect his authority. The supremacy of Gilgamesh in the story reflects the feelings toward leadership held by that society which created the story.
The Racist Mind In looking at the idea of being racist we must look at why people are like that. I would hope that most people would not be racist, but that would be in a perfect world and we don’t live there. Conflict theorists would say people are attracted to the message of hate because the way the power elite keeps us at odds. They keep us believing that the other race is trying to take what little there is left. If the power elite can keep us at one another’s throats then we won’t rise up and fight against the power elite.
