There is a correlation between heart disease and atherosclerosis with foods containing a high fat content. A high content of saturated fats found in animal products and trans fats raise cholesterol levels leading to atherosclerosis. Saturated fats should be no more than 10% of an individual’s energy, and for those with diabetes, that decreases to no more than 7% of total energy. The Atkins diet although placing little regulation on fat; they do regulate the types of fats being consumed. Many of the fats recommended are unsaturated, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats present in fish, nuts, olive oil and seeds, lowering LDL, bad cholesterol in the blood. However, it is important to keep in mind, “in a healthy diet, about 30% of total daily calories should come from fat” (Hanson, 2014). If it exceeds 37% of total calories, the risk of cardiovascular disease increases even with unsaturated fats. The Atkins Company released an article stating, “It is the position of the Atkins Nutritional Approach that all three types of fats (saturated, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) are necessary and important to human health and should be incorporated into the diet in a balanced proportion” (Atkins, 2016). Not only do low-fat diets not work but they are dangerous towards our body. Our body needs certain fats to sustain energy and support cell growth. Low-fat diets may worsen HDL cholesteric and triglycerides. Because low-fat diets have not been successful towards many people, they turn around to face another lie. They begin to abandon the idea of taking low-fat diets and turn to high-fat diets. The super-high-fat Atkins diet or zone and sugar busters diet which are just as flawed as the low-fat diets. Many people find it hard to lose weight and even on these diets they tend to still gain weight. Many of the reasons why diets high and low in fat or carbohydrates don’t work are because they are not accurate. They are hard to keep up so they eventually stop the diet. It is safe to say that the Atkins Diet is not as harmless as everyone would like to think. Originally, the disadvantages were not taken into account because desperate dieters were interested in partaking in a seemingly easy way to lose weight. However, plenty of negative side effects have been shown to support the fact that the Atkins plan is more harmful than people realized. These negative side effects range from headaches and dizziness, to the more severe reactions consisting of kidney and heart problems. These negative effects are caused primarily by a lack of carbohydrates in the body, which results in an increase of ketones, or poisonous chemicals. And, as it turns out, many organizations including The American Heart Association, support the fact that these effects do occur after following the Atkins dieting plan. The Atkins Diet reduces one's intake of carbohydrates to the bare minimum substituting them with high fats and proteins. The first phase of this diet is known as the induction phase. This specific phase lasts for a minimum of two weeks. Along with this phase comes a twenty gram limit of carbohydrates, and no more. A low fat heart healthy diet is my idea of the best nutritional diet, especially since heart disease is the number one killer among people in the United States. Cardiovascular disease is very prevalent in my family. I lost both, paternal and maternal grandparents to heart disease. My father has severe heart disease, and my mother and brother are both hypertensive and require medication; therefore, I know I’m especially vulnerable to this disease.
In all, low carb diets are not the best solution for weight loss. The health risks involved display a negative impact on the long term health and well being of individuals, and above all is not sustainable. They myths of low carb diets display that these diets are never beneficial for anyone, whether they diet for a short or long period of time. As well, people start living this lifestyle for the wrong reasons. Rapid weight loss is deemed as more important than any health risks involved. Based on all these facts, it can be concluded that living a low carb lifestyle will never promote a persons well being and overall health.
