In December of 2012, a young man named Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, armed and ready to kill. He shot twenty innocent children and six adults, not including himself. All twenty-six people had been killed immediately and police did not arrive on the scene fast enough to prevent the massacre. Adam Lanza was a mentally ill man with Asperger’s syndrome. He had taken the lives of these innocent children and adults with an AR-15. After this incident, stricter gun laws immediately went under questioning, although the US had laws previously restricting gun usage. There were thoughts of stricter gun laws after other mass shootings that are similar to the shooting at Sandy Hook. The other mass shootings consist of the shooting in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. Also, the shooting at Virginia Tech made the government question the availability of guns to citizens. The Columbine High School shooting in 1999, which also took place in Colorado, triggered thoughts about improving and altering gun laws. One thing that all of these shootings have in common is that they were all done by people who were mentally insane, and did not have a stable mentality. Should you be taking the rights away from law abiding citizens who are mentally sane? Now because of one man, AR-15s are banned in the state of Connecticut which is not fair to law abiding citizens. This ban also includes the amounts of bullets a firearm could hold at one time, which is limited to ten rounds in the state of Connecticut. This law went into effect January 1, 2014. The second amendment states, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”... ... middle of paper ... ...dividual in which was purchasing the firearm was not a felon, did not have a mental illness, and did not take part in domestic violence. For example, Mark Russo a psychiatric patient threatened to kill his mother if officers took his 18 rifles that he holds in his mother’s house. Police later seized seven high capacity magazines including all of the firearms. Although in the spring Russo is expected to receive all of his firearms back from the police. People that are mentally ill should not be owning firearms though because it is not known when that mentally ill person will snap on themselves or on another person. Most of mass shootings are done by people that have a mental illness. The movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting, a Tucson supermarket, and the Virginia Tech shooting were all done by people in which were mentally ill.
