There has always been an opinion on the correct way to deal with criminals. This will be yet another, but by me. The ways of dealing with criminals is not easy, and there is technically not a definite way to do so. But in my opinion, among the many goals of corrections, the ways I can agree on are a combination of rehabilitation and deterrence. These two things are completely opposite of one another, but used at the appropriate times, to the appropriate inmates, it could work in a positive way.

Starting with rehabilitation, many people believe it is very lenient and possesses a “hug a thug” attitude. In reality, it is much more complex and can be useful if done correctly. Although, I believe that rehabilitation can not work for every …show more content…

In any situation for the criminal justice system, there will be factors to consider for each case, and should be handled thoroughly. Choosing when to use these methods is the important part and should not be taken lightly. For example, a person that killed someone and did it simply because they wanted to and do not care at all, should be tested for mental illness. If this person has severe mental problems,than rehabilitation can be an option. If this person is a threat towards themselves and others, than releasing them would not be the wisest decision and should continue on with treatment. A criminal that simply commits crime simply through stupidity and not caring, than deterrence can be the option to choose. It is all considered through the details of the individual and their crime they performed. There is no simple right or wrong solution, there is simply choosing the best and most appropriate choice for the specific case. Choosing to use the combination of rehabilitation and deterrence is quite conflicting of one another. But some cases call for help and treatment, and so call for punishment. There are so many factors that contribute to a case, that the decision can be altered so fast by the smallest detail.
