It is not easy for military personal who were trained in combat, and spent months overseas, to come home and “turn off” the violence. When I was in the military, I never married or had any of my family members come out to visit me, because I did not want them to see that I was a changed person. I did see a lot of my colleagues start abusing their medication and alcohol, because they could not cope well at home. As stated before, there are a number of reasons why people are violent than others, but I believe that people who experienced some form of post-traumatic stress, and does not know how to properly cope with their feelings, may display a severe case of violence towards their loved ones. However, a lot of returning personal get in trouble with the law, because they expose violence towards their families. According to Cynthia Crosson-Tower (2013), “the reintegration of the deployed parent (post-deployments) into the family brings with it a myriad of challenges” (Crosson-Tower, 2013, pg. 109). The individual who comes home may be uncomfortable with a lot changes in their home, and they do not know how to manage it. There may also be conflict between both parents over simple items, such as house rules and different parenting styles. According to the DSM-IV (1994), traumatic events that may result in PTSD include military combat, violence personal assault, being taken hostage, being tortured, and severe accidents (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Many service members have experienced direct enemy fire, improvised explosive devices, or even close contact with the enemy. There may be something that can agitate or disturb the service member, which could end up displaying different forms of violence. It really is hard for someone to just “turn it off”.
