Marijuana is an incredibly prominent and controversial issue in society today. Our American society is facing a tremendous drug problem. A public debate is going on to find a solution to the drug dilemma and legalizing marijuana is not the way to go. Marijuana also known as Cannabis should not be legalized because it is a harmful gateway drug, it causes health issues and is a mind altering perception.
Marijuana is a gateway drug that potentially introduces users to additional serious illegal substances in which they abuse, which pose an even greater threat to the public. Marijuana can impair your short term memory, alter your sense of time, and reduce your ability to do things that require concentration, swift reactions and coordination. Medical marijuana helps cancer patients in ways pharmaceuticals can’t, it has many great purposes. One of those are it helps you gain your appetite back, helps manage the pain, and relieves nausea and vomiting. Also improves sleep in patients using chemotherapy. Marijuana slows and stops the cancer cells from spreading throughout the body. Another way it is helpful is in patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) it helps with aiding memory extinction. Memory extinction is the normal healthy process of removing association of harmful stimuli. By doing this it helps control the brain from fear and anxiety of what may have affected them. Multiple Sclerosis is another medical condition that marijuana has positive effects on. It is used to stop the negative neurological muscle spasms caused by the disease.
