Since the dawn of time, women have been lower on the career totem pole. The gender pay gap is approximately 77 cents (Koros 17). If averaged out, it means women work an average of 57 days for free (Koros 17). The Paycheck Fairness Act, which hasn’t been passed yet, will “Promote more equity in pay structures, ensure paid parental leave, do more for addressing sexual violence on campuses and in the military, and provide more support for access to reproductive services” (Koros 17). Not only is there a difference in wages amongst genders, but also a significant difference within the jobs held by each gender. Islamic women are rising up to their oppressors and risking everything for their freedom and rights. The belief that a woman is obligated to suffer at the hands of her husband is quickly fading away (Segran 13). As feminism grows, the inhibitions diminish. Musawah, a group that encourages Islamic women to take control of their lives, is helping them get the rights they deserve, like a good education and protection against the marital harm their husbands cause (Segran 17). Emotional and physical harm are affecting far too many women in the Middle East, but feminism can and will stop it. Secular feminists in Islamic countries are focusing on “universal human rights,” rather than focusing on the Islamic religion (Segran 15). Another group is “Sisters in Islam,” which is over 25 years old and is still helping Islamic women regain their lives (Segran 13).
Feminism, girl power, whatever you want to call it, is becoming more and more popular as the years go by. In the beginning, women were forced to be stay-at-home wives and moms with no education, no suffrage, and no ambitions to be free. Now, women are doctors, lawyers, physicists, rocket scientists, etc. with higher educations and dreams that reach the sky. As feminism rises, misogyny sinks and will hopefully be eradicated
