Assessing the Efficacy of Gun Control Measures

Guns and crime are two words that people tend to relate, some people say more guns means more crime, and others say less guns is more crime. One thing is for sure, the current gun control measures are not working. Two articles, one by John C Moorhouse and Brent Wanner, another one by William J vizzard, take this topic and convey their own opinion about it. In their article, “Does Gun Control, Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control”, Moorhouse and Wanner, come to the conclusion that Gun Control doesn’t reduce crime. Moorhouse and Wanner, believe that the current gun control measure fail to make any difference, on the contrary, more crime is increasing gun control. In order to support their idea, Moorhouse and Wanner, recall different studies made by researchers on gun control and crime. Actually, the first half of the article is mainly a summary of different studies, you can literally find a research mentioned in every paragraph. The authors want to show that their research doesn’t come from just one study, but quite a few. They even quote studies that show gun control does reduce crime, which is what they are trying to disprove. Moorhouse and Wanner, tend to use the same technique when disproving a study. First, the authors present studies where gun control does show to reduce crime. Then, the authors point out the weakness in the studies. For example Moorhouse and Wanner state that “characteristics of early studies, is the failure to include relevant control variables”. (4). Meaning the studies didn’t take into consideration factors that may contribute to a reduction of crime, factors such as economic and society. Later they state that “Studies…. That do control for social and economic factors find no evidence of gun control reducing violent crime rates”. Later with the same concept, Moorhouse and Wanner, present more studies that take in consideration constant variables, and show that gun control doesn’t reduce
