Whether we see it or not, genetic engineering is widely used in our society today. Genetic engineering at its core is the editing of genetic material. Many applications of this technology that we see commonly, are in foods for example corn or soybeans, and even in animals to give them favourable traits. Deducing from that statement, the industry that it is most prevalent in is clearly the farming industry. These techniques make it possible to edit the genes of certain crops to make them more resistant to weather conditions or even to pests. They can do the same things with animals. Some of the uses in this case is to make stronger, better animals or even make the products of those animals have improved qualities.

Some test-tube babies, like Louise Brown who was the first test-tube baby ever [7], are completely fine and well to this day but there still is no long term studies to show that this practice is safe in a long term perspective. Especially in egg donors who use a hormone to speed up their egg production, the practice may potentially cause cancer down the road in children who are born from these egg cells [8]. Now there are endless ethical and moral issues that we can bring up when it comes to the topic of genetic engineering in humans, some of them being lack of diversity and cloning. At the same time, we must understand that the potential with this technology is huge if only we can develop it to work effectively. Lives have been lost due to testing and it is creating huge ethical debates. Also, whether GMO crops are safe and whether cross contamination of genes between crops could be an environmental problem, these are other issues that need to be addressed. One of the most necessary uses of genetic engineering is tackling diseases. Every parent's dream of having the perfect baby with pretty eyes, hair, skin, and gifted abilities. Some parents have even taken drastic measures to ensure their babies are born with these gorgeous features and talents. Some parents are willing to genetically manipulate their embryos to create their perfect baby. Bio technology has allowed parents to piece together their ideal human being from their eye color to their mental and physical abilities. Genetic Manipulation in some eyes can be seen as wrong and right in the other if used for the right reasons. I believe that scientists should use this new technology for preventing birth defects and help cure serve illness among babies. Widely considered a revolutionary scientific breakthrough, genetic engineering has been on a path toward changing the world since its introduction in 1973 by Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer (What). However, as genetic engineering slowly permeates the lives of humanity, the morals and ethics behind what are now common practices are entering public attention, and as a culture we are left to question whether the change brought on by such a discovery bring benefits and positive change, or damage and destruction. Genetic engineering is justified through applied bioethics and despite arguments against its societal implantation, should be fully utilized in efforts to develop into the 21st century.
Gmo’s have not yet been studied thoroughly to be considered to be put out on the market because the whole idea is relatively new, its not FDA approved, and its not known whether Gmo’s will have long term effects or not.
In conclusion, genetic engineering in humans is a highly controversial topic of discussion. It theoretically has the potential to extend life spans, eliminate genetic disease, and create designer babies. However, much of these processes are purely based on theory as genetic engineering in humans is a relatively untested area of science. The moral and ethical issues that arise in discussion on the topic prove exceeding difficult to resolve, due to the evenly weighted pros and cons, both possessing valid perspectives. It is doubtful that there will ever be agreement, due to the high level of dispute, but we can’t yet give up on the idea, as it offers hope for the future that no other medical treatment can.
In recent discussions of genetic engineering, a controversial issue has been whether genetic engineering is ethical or not. In “The Person, the Soul, and Genetic Engineering,” JC Polkinghorne discusses about the moral status of the very early embryo and therapeutic cloning. J. H. Brooke’s article “Commentary on: The Person, the Soul, and Genetic Engineering” comments and state opinions that counter Polkinghorne’s article. On the other hand John Harris’s ““Goodbye Dolly?” The Ethics of Human Cloning” examines “the possible uses and abuses of human cloning and draw out the principal ethical dimensions, both of what might be done and its meaning, and of public and official response” (353). While in C. Cameron and R. Williamson’s article, “In the World of Dolly, When Does a Human Embryo Acquire Respect?” discusses about the debate of genetic engineering, the authors also look at several religious views of when life begins according to fertilization. Also Cameron and Williamson discuss when life begins in a “Dolly embryo” (Cameron and Williamson 218). Cameron and Williamson go into depth on when an embryo or a “Dolly embryo” acquire respect. I will argue when dealing with genetic engineering a human embryo is entitled to dignity/respect, this topic needs to be dealt with informative people, and religious groups are biased in the genetic engineering debate.
A Genetically Modified Organism can be known as a “sped up process of evolution” (Penn State Ag Science Magazine). Genetic modification is done by removing a certain part of DNA from a gene, then placing it into a different organisms gene. The technology is widely used by farmers (Penn State Ag Science Magazine). Genetic modification is usually performed on crops, therefore is “in 70% of our food” (Davis). Genetically Modified Organisms are unsafe for the environment, and will create more long term problems. In the discussion of genetic modification, there is a debate as to whether or not it should be allowed. Whereas some are convinced that genetic modification can help cure diseases, others maintain that it should not be used to enhance a child’s abilities. Scientists state that genetic engineering only works 50% of the time. Also, when a new gene is placed in the gene code, there will be various mutations that will definitely result in change but may not be for the better.
To start with , genetic engineering is another term used for genetic manipulation which is a process consisting the addition of new DNA to an organism. Genetic engineering is often mistaken with breeding which is technique that is mostly used with animals in order to create faster or stronger offspring. Genetic engineering is however different from breeding because it uses much less natural techniques that are usually performed in the lab. The big difference though in terms of genetics , is that genetic engineering allows gene modification that are not close to a certain species. For example , we can mix the DNA of a vegetable with the DNA of an animal in manipulation which is impossible by breeding. The basic idea of genetic manipulation is to isolate a certain cell’s DNA and to mix it with the DNA victor to create a whole new cell with new characteristics. The problem though behind all that, is that its really hard to predict what the results are going to be.
