The Pros And Cons Of Fracking

For a fracking well to be successful, it must disturb the rock foundations to allow the petroleum products to be released, but this cannot occur if there is no fracking fluid. Fracking fluid is made up of three distinct parts, the biggest part being water, followed by smaller portions of proppants and chemical fluids. This combination of fluid has multiple jobs in the process of fracking, some of the most significant jobs are that it adds lubrication, extends fractures and transports proppant into the fracture. Proppants are “a material used in hydraulic rock fracturing in order to keep the fissures open and thereby aid extraction” (Collins Dictionary). This is a very important job because if the fracture is not kept open the petroleum product …show more content…

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2010 the consumption of water used in fracking wells was around 70 to 140 billion gallons and that is just the water used and does not include the other liquids used (earthworksaction.org). Also since all the water is mixed with the toxic chemicals, it is all contaminated and from there it only goes to two different places. One the contaminated water that is not sucked back up and placed into “safe contaminate ponds” and two it seeps back into the ground. Both of these places are bad for the environment for the water that seeps back into the ground can reach nearby watersheds and contaminate the drinking water within the watershed. Studies have been performed that show that the waste water of fracking fluids contain a chemical know as 2-Dichloroethane and the levels present in the samples exceed the EPA safe drinking level by 316 percent (earth). Likewise if this water did get into nearby watershed it would have multiple adverse effect for everyone that lived in the area, but there is just as many problem for the water that is sucked out of the wells to be treated. Since all the water that is pumped out is contaminated as well it has to be stored in large ponds that are meant to contain the water from getting anywhere before it can be taken away to be treated. However, since many of the companies that use fracking have very weak guidelines on environmental regulations, so it is not uncommon for waste water from fracking to escape the safe containment ponds. There has even been a case in Pavillion, Wyoming where a fracking company had to reimburse the city due to the damages it has caused to the drinking water (carlton.edu). Although drinking water contamination is a very large concern of fracking, there are still other concerns, such as air pollution and seismic activity caused by
