Lynn J. Good, the chief executive officer, or CEO, of Duke Energy has already made a name for herself in the Utilities industry. On July 1st, 2013, Good took over as the new CEO of Duke. Quickly enough, Good was forced into scandal. Hereafter, Good had to demonstrate her strategic leadership.

Early 2014, Good faced the negative consequences of romantic leadership. Not even a year after her hiring, Good had to combat both a major scandal and being forced into the limelight for the first time in her career. February of 2014, coal ash began to spill into the Dan river in Eden, North Carolina. This spill directly impacted several towns within Virginia. In terms of Duke Energy’s vision for the future, Duke has been investing billions in offering cheaper sources of energy for its customers(Tully). Currently, Duke is investing five billion dollars to build a pipeline that would span from Pennsylvania to North Carolina(Tully). Good described the pipeline as “[a] critical step forward” (Downey). The purpose of this pipeline it to transport gas more efficiently. Another substantial goal and vision for Duke and Good is to invest in clean energy for the future (Tully)(Downey).

Duke Energy, being led by Good, has been leading the charge in cutting back from burning coal in order to operate. Duke is doing this by focusing on investing in renewable energy. This practice is accomplished by having multiple wind and solar farms throughout eighteen states(Sweet). By focusing on these farms and renewable energy, Duke has been able to cut down on coal usage to only contribute one-third of their power(Sweet). This is showing a conscious effort by Good and Duke to make ethical decisions for its customers and ultimately the environment
