Abortion
In society today, abortion is a topic that is discussed often. People all around the world have different opinions on abortion and often do not see eye to eye. Some of the questions that are asked are, ‘When does life actually begin?,’ and ‘When, if ever, is it right to terminate a pregnancy?’. There are many more questions that can be asked as well. The question that we all should ask ourselves is, “Is abortion the right thing to do.” People all around the world should agree that abortion is murder, and it is not an okay thing to do. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, a baby, a human being, and it is not okay. There are many reasons that people give is to why they have an abortion.

Legalization changed how women saw themselves: as mothers by chance, not by fate (Pollitt). When women have a choice they feel more secure. Choices give people the freedom to choose what they want and not what they are being forced to do. We need to say that it is their right, and, moreover, it is good for everyone that they have this regret: The whole society benefits when motherhood is voluntary (Pollitt). Women have abortions to rid themselves of another human that they can not physically take care of. For example, a young teenager who accidentally gets pregnant and is not ready to take on that kind of responsibility. In 2012, 699,202 legal induced abortions were reported to CDC from 49 reporting areas. The abortion rate for 2012 was 13.2 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44 years, and the abortion ratio was 210 abortions per 1,000 live births (CDC). Cons to abortion include reasons such as: taking an innocent life, a lot of the unplanned pregnancies later turn out to be wanted, abortions can cause serious mental distress to the woman in the form of depression and guilt. Abortion is the choice that kills an innocent human …show more content…
On April 6, 1977, a baby was born, her name Gianna Jessen. Jessen was a miracle baby as some would might say. Gianna Jessen’s biological mother was 17 years old and seven and a half months pregnant when she was counseled by the clinic to abort Gianna through saline instillation (Shaw). This abortion procedure requires saline solution to be entered into the amniotic sac, where the baby swallows it. Over the next 12 to 48 hours, the baby suffers immense pain as the result of being poisoned and burned (Shaw). The story of how Gianna Jessen survived is absolutely astonishing. She was born prematurely and weighed only 2 pounds at birth. She remained in the hospital for almost three months. A doctor once said she had a great will to
Anderson brings up point after point to support his opinion on pro-choice abortion. Anderson writes about how the government should have no say in a woman’s decision to abort even if she is past the first trimester: “Pregnancy and motherhood affect every aspect of a woman’s life - public and private, emotional and physical - and Roe v. Wade confirmed that it was an invasion of privacy for the government to step in and make reproductive decisions on a woman’s behalf” (Anderson, 2015). Anderson explains how he believes a woman who decides to have an abortion does it because it will negatively affect their life in a way that will be changed forever. The article goes on to explain some reasons why women choose to have abortions. To back up his
Abortion is a complex social and moral issue that remains unresolved in today’s society. It is continuously changing and renewing under new influences presented by different individuals as well as the global civilization as a whole. Arguments from both sides are often extremely dogmatic and defensive, presenting merely from one perspective. However, the common argument revolves closely on what the true definition of a person or a human being is and its relations to whether a fetus is a human being or not from the moment of conception. This is examined from a liberal point of view by Thomson (Thomson, 1971, p. 47-66), who explains that abortion can be justified in a wide range of cases and challenges the notion that it is morally impermissible. Anti-abortionists have taken an opposite stance and claimed that Thomson’s argument is exaggerated and patently false. In this paper, I will briefly examine Thomson’s perception of abortion and explain how the analogies demonstrated in her paper assist in supporting her view on legal abortion as well as why I agree with Thomson on some parts of her argumentation.
...ncreased pain, an aversion to sex and/or males in general, or the development of a promiscuous life-style.” It is also said that women who have abortions are not guaranteed to be able to conceive children. Women usually can experience the following physical complications: cervical, ovarian, and liver cancer, uterine perforation, cervical lacerations, placenta previa, premature delivery with the next baby, an ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis, and lower general health.
Abortion has always been a hard decision for a women to have to make. Mainly because people have always viewed abortion as either morally wrong or not wrong at all. Everyone has different thoughts and concerns when it comes to abortion. There are a numerous amount of reasons why a women has to choose abortion, whether it be rape, the feeling of being unprepared, not ready age wise or their life is in danger, whatever the case may be it should be their choice.
One of the most controversial and highly debatable subjects in the minds of the American public today is the topic of abortion. While abortion is seen as murder to some, others look upon it as an extremely safe procedure, offering numerous benefits to the recipient, predominantly being the right to choose. The argument has long been increasingly prevalent in the American political scene for decades, and is now being brought into new light as medical practices advance and technical flaws are effectively worked out. What cannot be altered, however, is the reality that what is being disposed of is in fact, a developing human life. It is this fact that the pro-life argument is based upon. The abortion debate not only revolves around the overall legality of the procedure, but also the conditions taking place that would condone such an operation.
There are tons upon tons of babies born every day. Among those babies there is bound to be some suffering from birth defects. Things such as severe genetic abnormalities or exposure to environmental toxins. These things can come from parents abusing drugs or alcohol while pregnant. The people involved need to take more responsibility to make sure these things don’t happen during pregnancy. As it stands though these things do happen. When they happen people have to make the choice if they will keep or abort the baby due to these genetic abnormalities or problems because of environmental toxins.
Thinking about abortion is easy but actually doing is very difficult. There are many procedures you have to go from, to abort your child. The after effect is tremendously effects to your physical and mental health. According to the best record based study of deaths following pregnancy and abortion, a 1997 government funded study in Finland, women who abort are approximately four times more likely to die in the following year than women who carry their pregnancies to
Abortion is one of the most controversial and highly debatable issues in the United States today. This hot topic has put both the supporting and opposing sides in an uproar to defend their positions. In abortion, a fetus is deliberately terminated from the woman’s womb. Though there are several different methods of abortion, they all aim to rid of the potential child. When carefully reading descriptions of the techniques to abort a fetus, one does not shrug it off their shoulders and write it off as morally acceptable. Every method is horrific no matter what perspective you take on the matter of abortion. Whether it is the “suction-aspiration” method or the “dilation and extract” method, one still realizes the gruesomeness of the process. How can anyone who values human beings overlook words and phrases like “cut the fetus into scraps to extricate it from the womb” or “the brain is sucked out with a vacuum”? While some people argue that abortion is a right and should remain legal, I believe that there are too many flaws with their claims to protect abortion for it to be preserved.
The topic of abortion is one of the most controversial issues in today’s society. Thousands of abortions take place every single day, and yet public opinion remains at a standstill as to whether or not abortion is ethical or not. According to a poll in 2013, fifty-four percent of the American public believes that the practice of abortion should be legal in all or most cases (“Public Opinion on Abortion”) Abortion has been defined as “the act of removing a human embryo or fetus from the uterus of a pregnant woman prior to the completion of the full term of pregnancy”(Rich, Wagner, and Geraldine). There are very strong opinions for and against this issue, but no one can deny the vast gray area of abortion. A person’s stance on the situation is often determined by how he views the fetus: a part of the mother’s body or as a human being. Abortion continues to be a moral issue because people have various views on the rights of the fetus and mother, the circumstances of the pregnancy, and their own religious convictions concerning the issue.
A single woman in her 20’s just found out she is pregnant. At first, she gets excited and fantasizes of all the things she wants to do with her baby. But then realizes that she isn’t ready; not financially, physically, emotionally or mentally. On top of that, she has school and work. Therefore, she calls her doctor to set up an appointment for other options. Come to find out, Michigan doesn’t allow insurances to cover abortion. Depending on which trimester you are in, abortion isn’t cheap. Michigan should allow insurance companies to cover abortion for every situation, not just rape or life endangerment.
Abortion is a voluminous topic today all around the world. Differing viewpoints on abortion are recognized in politics, religion, and throughout the general population. There is a small amount of people who are nonchalant on the subject. Women have abortions for many different reasons and according to certain groups these reasons are either justified or not. Everyone tends to have their own articulated opinion, and many vocalize tenaciously what they believe. Pro-life individuals along with religion are sanguine that abortion is ethically and morally erroneous. Whereas those who are pro-choice say that abortion is inconsequential and the mother’s choice is more important than the fetus. Reasons to not get an abortion include risks involved in receiving an abortion. In some cases death can occur. However, there are other alternatives to abortion. For example, raising the child and adoption.
The official definition is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. There is a lot of science on abortion, legal and illegal things, and even biblical evidence that you should be Pro-Life.
For hundreds of years, the United States of America has been a country defined by its promising opportunities and freedom. However, America has proven many times it is not the promised land that many residents of other countries have viewed it to be. Issues like euthanasia, death penalty, freedom of speech, and abortion have given rise to questions of the freedom in America. Abortion has proven to be one of the more tenacious issues that has brought controversy to America. In the Encyclopedia Britannica, abortion is defined as “the expulsion of a fetus from the uterus before it has reached the stage of viability” (Encyclopedia Brittanica). In simple terms, having an abortion is a pregnant woman choosing to not deliver her child. The Guttmacher Institute provides that there are 6.6 million pregnancies in the United States each year, and 51% are unintended (Guttmacher Institute). Further facts from the Guttmacher Institute states that around 358,000 women die per year because of pregnancy and the United States accounts for 60% of those maternal deaths (Guttmacher Institute). There is an estimated over 1 million abortions in the United States per year (Worldometers Real Time World Statistics). Death is one of the reasons of why women decide to have an abortion. More reasons in modern society include fear of parents, unplanned pregnancies, and financial instability. The controversy surrounding abortion is revolved around the two opposing sides which includes pro-life, the argument that abortion should be illegal, and pro-choice, in which people argue women should have the choice of whether or not to have an abortion. People in favor of pro-life support their decision with many arguments. They state that a fetus is considered a h...
The deliberate termination of a human pregnancy is called an abortion. Abortions are a widely debated subject throughout the world. In the United States, abortions are legal due to the Roe v. Wade law. Some would argue that abortions are ethnically and morally wrong, while others assert it is simply a woman’s choice. There are a number of legitimate reasons why a woman would choose to abort her unborn; financial status, age and health are just a few. With today’s technology and a certified doctor, this procedure is harmless to both the mother and her fetus. Abortions are viewed by many as dangerous and immoral acts of humanity against an unborn fetus. But in reality, abortions terminate a pregnancy that could result in a child being born into a family with inadequate finances, irresponsible parenting, and possible health problems. For these reasons, abortions offer a perfectly viable solution in situations that would otherwise result in children being raised under circumstances that are at best, not ideal, and at worst, harmful and potentially dangerous.
However, there are many pro-choice arguments that give reason for why abortions are morally right. Women are saved from unsafe, medical abortions by allowing women the choice to abort the fetus. According to Pollitt in her article “Abortion: No More Apologies”, if abortions were still illegal than women would still be hiding and participating in illegal, unsafe abortions (2). By giving women a choice, they are able to make a safe, healthy choice for themselves. “Ancient methods of inducing abortion included shaking women and inserting foreign objects into the vagina in the hope of causing infection”(MacKinnon 226). Also by allowing abortions and birth control people are able to prevent unwanted pregnancies that will cause them to have financial, health, or even mental
