The Progression of the Role of Women in America

Through the prism of time, women’s position in America has changed, especially during the periods of 1890 to 1925. Not only did things change economically for them but also politically. Many assumptions made about the nature of women affected their position drastically. From the era of 1890 to 1925 contributed to a considerable adjustment in the statements about the nature of women and a significant improvement in the general position of women in America.

The development of the economy had changed drastically by the late 1800’s. Technology was forming and it was becoming big. In 1879 a man by the name of Thomas Edison invented a creation new to America, the light bulb. His invention brought people the scientific brake through, electricity. For the first time people didn’t have to work in the dark or by candlelight, they could now carry on their work past their normal hours. The light bulb gave American citizens 13 hours of light and there began the Edison Electric Company. Along with the light bulb came the sewing machine that changed the woman’s work force drastically. With the new technology came factories, sweatshops and garment workers. This took the women out of the household and into the workforce (Doc. E). The chore of housework had been eradicated to a vast extent by modern technology and electricity. Canned foods, bakeries, and laundries were broadly used by upper-class and middle-class Americans. Home economic courses provided women with the opportunity to become more resourceful managers within their homes. More women started graduating from colleges as more universities realized the potential women had. This allowed women to be more accepting in the workforce and expanded their businesses opportunities. Awareness ...

...ren, and the home. Women eventually strived to gain their rights to have equal opportunity as men. Through the progressive era, they overcame numerous obstacles at various stages. Women sought to bring change as the nation’s problems bore down on their families by reshaping their image in the economy, society, politics, and civic institutions. Women fought for better working conditions, equal pay, and higher education and voting rights. Women often banned together through organized groups, such as NCL or the National Women’s Suffrage Association) NWSA) in order to achieve these changes. Real Legislative reform, however, did not become possible until women gained the right to vote. If progressivism had not started, women today would still be discriminated for their sex. Women would be doing the same thing and America would not have advanced in technology.
