My strengths and weaknesses make want to become a better writer hopefully this class will help. I 've never been a good writer but then again not everyone is, my strengths push me and weaknesses pull me back but only with practice and help will the weaknesses be vanished. Being able to know what to write but not know how to piece it together is a huge weakness. It doesn’t sound like a huge problem but it 's more complex than it sounds. As I am writing this exact sentence, I don’t quite know where I am going with it. My writing process is unorthodox and unorganized, but it is what I do everytime. When I stop trying to follow the linear model of writing, explained by Nancy Sommers as the process of forming an idea, writing about it, then revising afterwards, I feel that I am more capable of discovering something meaningful within my words. When I am forced to write a thesis statement and base my paper solely on it, it doesn’t come out as good as I think it should. It decreases the potential for my ideas to grow and discoveries to be made.
Giving it to a different person can give your essay a different perspective. Of course during a timed write you can’t do that, but by giving your paper to another student or professor it can only help you. Being open to criticism is necessary for your essay and in becoming a good writer. I used to be offended when other people would criticize my writing, but now I am more open and encourage people to give me criticism. There is no perfect way on how to write an essay and that is why everyone has their own way of writing.
My professor also commented that I needed to proofread my essay before submitting it. After this experience, I made sure that I have time to proofread in-class essays and to always proofread essays before submitting them. Reading my essay over and over again is tiring. However, by proofreading my essay, I would have the chance to edit mistakes. This lesson helped me be a better writer by catching mistakes that can confuse my readers.
When it comes to writing, my first challenge is always figuring out what I want to say and how to say it in a way that is understandable and meets the expectations of my reader. Knowing that my personal thoughts and opinions will be graded by someone who may or may not understand the point I’m trying to make, intimidates me. In his essay on self revision, Donald Murray statement that both professional and student writers are “overly critical, think everything is dreadful, tear up page after page, never complete a draft, and see the task as hopeless” (Murray), is the epitome of my writing process. In elementary school we were all taught a basic writing process: brainstorm, write a rough draft, revise and proofread, write a final draft. My introduction was not clear and could not set the tone for the remainder of the essay. I remember my professor said that, “Do not leave the reader gue... ... middle of paper ... ...e clean pages, I realize that I did not actively read the book. In EN 101 class, I have learned to read with a highlighter which has drastically taken my writing to a new level because I am able to connect back my initial insights marked on the page. I acquired many skills over the EN 101 semester. My major weaknesses in essay writing which were writing a sound thesis statement, expository writing and critical thinking now became my strengths in every essay I write.
I say to my students ALL the time, “PLEASE re-read your work. I know you don’t want to but I promise it’s going to help.” However, I am guilty as charged! Most of the time I just want to get the paper done and turn it in. I spend very little time going over my own work or reading it out loud. For some reason I have a mental block against going back to my own work and revising.
English Final Exam College Life: My English Writing Experience College English Classes are a stepping stone for all students who want to peruse a college degree, and they are very effective for students who will be having to take higher English Courses. When I first started college, I took the English 101 Course, and then, I took the English 102 Course. After attending both of these classes, they helped me grow as a writer, and prepared me for the future English Courses that I will be taking. When I first began the English Writing Program, I was a little concerned with having to write my first paper, but the nervousness quickly dissipated when I knew that my professor would be helping us with our writing. Writing a good college essay is hard because you have to know how to go about writing your paper without sounding like a broken record and you have to make sure its unique so that your reader doesn 't get bored. I have always had a hard time with writing, I will try and better myself because that’s all I can do. I will apply all the things I said I would to make my college essay better and hope it works out, and if it doesn 't then I will try again and see where my mistakes were made and change them because if not I will never learn. writing a college essay is difficult but only as difficult as you allow it to
These strengths and weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester. My first writing weakness was deciding what to write about. I had to read the essay topic over and over again to understand what it was asking for. I would worry that I wouldn’t understand the topic correctly. While writing the essay I was scared to get out of topic and write about something else I wasn’t supposed to write about.
