California is going through the worse drought it has faced in many decades. It is not just the lack of rain we received last year, but poor management of our water resources which worsen the drought. The mere idea of running out of water is not to be taken lightly, only a small amount on our planet is safe for human consumption; keeping that in mind Californians must face the necessity to rationalize water in order to cope with the concurrent crisis. The practice of rationing will help maintain water levels. The expected result of this calamity is water shortages and a major impact in the agricultural level across our entire state.
The drought caused a lot of unfavorable conditions for farmers in the southwest. In Worster’s book he says “Few of us want to live in the region now. There is too much wind, dirt, flatness, space, barbed wire, drought, uncertainty, hard work…” (Worster 105). The droughts caused many unfavorable condition throughout the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles and neighboring sections of Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico. Thus, roughly one-third of Texas and Oklahoman farmers left their homes and headed to California in search of migrant work.

Wade Graham believes that water should be priced higher; that way people aren’t wasting water. Water is a limited resource that should never be wasted, and is probably California’s most valuable resource. Unfortunately, many people waste water; instead of conserve water especially when we live in the state of California where we are subject to having many droughts. Wade Graham tells his readers how farmers receive subsidies for water; yet, farmers don’t update their ways of how they water their crops. By farmers not using efficient ways to water their crops they are wasting tons of our natural resource water.
Overall, desertification is a worldwide problem that needs all of our attention. Numerous cultures in mainly rural areas are being exposed to massive wind storms, deteriorating food quality and quality of life because of this environmental problem. There are a few organizations whose common goal is to stop and reverse desertification. In the end, I hope more people become educated about this topic and actively take steps to end its destruction.
This natural disaster is called a drought. Drought, in my opinion, is the worst natural disaster of all. It not only affects us with a dry weather and uncomfortable heat waves, it also affects agriculture, and even drastically change the way we live about (Eliasson, 2011). That is why I, as a fellow inhabitant of Earth, urge people today to conserve water to combat the evils of drought. We, as people, must think of not only how this will affect us.
People are now malnourished since they decide to take food that they were going to eat and feed the cattle and goats with it. Some who can’t even afford their own food eventually take grass from their roofs to feed the cows this then leaves the people living in adequate shelter. Review of article 2 “Horn of Africa sees 'worst drought in 60 years”. Drought is one of the natural disaster that develop slowly one might not even notice. Droughts tend to last a long time.
The economics of the Valley’s agriculture is essential to learn and understand. If the farmers are not able to consume the necessary amount of water to have a successful output then everyone will suffer. “In one ongoing case, a federal judge has restricted the operations of irrigation pumps in the Sacramento Delta because they are endangering a tiny fish called the delta smelt (Cornett P.1).” If governemental regulations continue in t... ... middle of paper ... ...he farmers here in the Valley. “California farmers probably will take 82,000 acres out of cultivation this year if the state gets an average amount of rain and snow this winter, according to a recent study commissioned by Western Growers, which represents the California and Arizona produce industries. The economic loss would reach at least $69 million in farm production, according to the study (Halper).” That much of a loss is substantial to take into account.
This is a big issue because on a global scale we are letting Eastern Africa’s people suffer when there is no need of it. The drought in Eastern Africa is causing many conflicts and death due to lack of food and water. Meaning of Drought “For most of the history of our species we were helpless to understand how nature works. We took every storm, drought, illness and comet personally. We created myths and spirits in an attempt to explain the patterns of nature (Druyan).” According to Fox, Drought came also be seen as a slow- motion train wreck.
