One major issue that is still developing in the world right now and will have effect on other countries is Catalonia gaining independence from Spain. The issue between Catalonia and Spain is still developing right now and is still unclear how it will resolve. However, if Catalonia does gain independence from Spain, repercussions will be felt around the world but especially in Europe. Catalonia is the north-eastern region of Spain which is home to about six and a half million people. Catalonia alone is larger (population wise) than four other states in the European Union (Desquens). They simply just wanted more autonomy from Spain (Marinzel 8). They want the guaranteed right, from the Spanish government, to speak their own language and have their own culture (Marinzel 8). They also want to be able to tax their citizens separate from what the Spanish government does (Marinzel 8). A big problem we are seeing is that whenever the Catalan government brings up a tax plan to the Spanish government they turn it down immediately, which is pushing more people regionalists to secessionists (Marinzel 8). Many people in Catalonia are in favor of devolution along with some other small groups in Spain (Guibernau 62). These people have been pushing legislation at the government which would give Catalonia more cultural autonomy, but the Spanish government is not in favor of this. In recent years however, other Catalans feel like devolution has not helped their cause (Guibernau 62). These people still demand greater cultural autonym and they still believe that the Spanish government wants the same cultural for everyone (Guibernau 62). A solution for these people who do not want to secede but also want less government in their region is there. George Orwell, noted writer and journalist, arrived in Barcelona, Spain in late 1936 to cover the fight against fascism. Being an avid fan of socialism, he was amazed to see the small glimpse of socialism in action. He was intrigued to say the least, of the classless society he observed there. Barcelona, Spain at this time was held under Anarchist control, and as such most of the old class society rituals were abandoned: tipping, titles, and the old divisions between rich and poor were practically gone. Everyone was equal in this new society, and most of the rich aristocrats had either fled or went into hiding. This being the truest form of socialism and brotherhood Orwell had ever before witnessed he put down his pen and took up arms. Homage to Catalonia, which Orwell later wrote after fleeing to France in 1937, gives his account as a militiaman in the P.O.U.M (Partido Obrero de Unificacion Marxista) Militia, which roughly translates to the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification. At the time this was one of the many anti-fascist factions in Spain, later he remarks joining P.O.U.M with ignorant bliss of what the difference was between any of them.
In the novel, The Awakening, Edna Pontellier, the main character, is married to a Creole named Leonce with whom she lives in New Orleans. As the novel opens, they are vacationing in Grand Isle with many other rich couples. Edna is not originally from the Creole lifestyle, so she is not immediately comfortable with being open. However, she starts talking to Adele, another Creole wife, who starts to show her how to open up. As they talk more, Robert, a very young, good-looking attendant, shows up and begins to take a fancy to Edna. While they are at Grand Isle, Edna seems to find herself. Once they leave, Edna starts to become more independent. We begin to see these types of independent women at the turn of the twentieth century. Throughout the novel, we see Edna turn from a dependent woman and housewife, such as Adele, to the powerful and independent woman of the twentieth century.
The Spanish-American War allowed the United States to acquire large amounts of territories. The Spanish-American War happened in the year 1898, and was obviously between the United States and Spain. The start of the war was caused by Cuba’s want and struggle for independence from Spain. American sympathy for the Cuban rebels grew as Spain took to more hostile tactics to calm the rebellion in Cuba. The United States newspapers showed great anger and hatred towards Spain’s hostility towards Cuba during the rebellion. There were many contributing factors that ultimately led to the uprising of Latin American colonies. Europe's strong hold on the economic and political life of Latin America, was creating friction between the Latin Colonies and the European nations.
