piece of legislation passed by the government regarding gun control, it is plain to see that new legislation is necessary: especially considering the fact that the assault weapons ban has since expired. This makes new legislation paramount. It also illustrates that those wishing to commit a mass shooting will inevitably find a means to obtain a weapon, whether that be by purchasing a weapon from a straw buyer, a person who purchases a weapon legally and then sells it to another person who cannot legally purchase a weapon, by stealing, or by buying the weapon on the black market (Wintemute). In short, expired gun legislation does nothing to provide a solution to the quandary of mass shootings in America. Solving the problem of outdated legislation, …show more content…
One website confirms the notion that background checks do fail: “of 62 mass shootings in the United States between 1982 and 2012, 49 of the shooters used legally obtained guns. Collectively, 143 guns were possessed by the killers with about 75% obtained legally” (Gun Control). Discernibly, controlling guns will not end mass shootings. Conversely, a culture that supports gun awareness will provide a long term solution to gun violence. Evidently, individuals who are carrying out mass shootings are first time offenders and do not raise red flags when purchasing guns or do not have criminal histories when buying a gun. This means, their is no way to predict the time or place of these mass shootings and that these calamities will continue to occur, requiring a more complex solution stemming from …show more content…
With all other options exacerbated, the only other solution that exists stems from education. In other words, Americans must form a culture that educates future generations about the safe and proper use of firearms. In the past, students used to participate in school affiliated shooting teams, and hunting was something many kids spent their free time doing. Additionally, kids would openly carry their guns into schools across America and keep them in their cars for after school evening hunts. Consequently, times have changed and these ways of openly carrying guns are a thing of the past. The Swiss, on the other hand, carry firearms openly within their society and practice safe gun handling procedures throughout their culture. They also have reported lower gun related killings than other nations and educate their children about the safe use of firearms (Bachmann). Protecting their society by openly carrying guns and educating students in schools about safe gun handling, the Swiss pose another option in ending mass shootings in America. Adopting similar principles, the United States could establish a society of individuals that would respect guns and raise awareness on the issue of mass shootings. Providing the most effective means of education, teachers could educate their students regarding the safe use of firearms. As one study confirms, Thirty-nine respondents
There are many good people out there, and sometimes they are to good. In some circumstances, someone might buy a firearm and a relative that did not meet the qualifications to obtain a firearm just ask to use it to go hunting. Something that simple as a family member asking to try out another qualified family members firearms can put many lives in danger. Many people will not think a family member would be capable of taking a life or their own and that trust is what put many others lives in danger. Another reason as to why a family background check needs to be enforced is what if the person that obtains the firearm lives in the home with a known criminal? In a short reading from the “American Now” book a short article By James Stancliffe called Guns Act As a Force Multiplier endangering everyone he states that his “main issue with guns is that they act as a force multiplier”, and this is true if falling into the wrong hands. By giving someone with a criminal family member access to a firearm is just like giving that known criminal access to that firearm also. One last reason a family background check needs to be enforced is if there are children in the house. If there are children in the home further precautions need to be enforced, like a lock box with a key in a high area in a low traffic room . Children do not know the dangers of a
Should the 2nd amendment be revoked or changed? Many Americans would say “No,” stating that guns are dangerous and times have changed. Others might argue that having the right to bear arms keeps people safe and less threated by the outside world. In this debate, both sides of the 2nd amendments constitutional rights will be argued. The upcoming presidential election has been influencing voters to revoke our 2nd amendment rights which could change the democracy on which our country was founded.
Imagine being forced to crawl and hide with gunshots near your ears. Imagine seeing people shot to death in front of you. Believe it or not, scenes like these occur on a daily basis in America. In the first 320 days of this year there were 325 mass shootings in the nation, defined as where there were more than four victims at each shooting. (Mass Shooting Tracker). This egregious level of violence is unacceptable in a developed country and major reform in gun legislation to improve the tragic state of public safety in the United States today. Although critics of expanded gun legislation incorrectly argue that easier access to guns increases safety and that gun laws are unconstitutional, it is imperative that America adopts stronger gun control legislation because heightened regulations reduce crime rates and have successfully improved public safety in other developed countries. In a country like the United States, no one
Without sufficient gun control laws, the death rate in the United States is incredibly high. Gun violence in the United States results in thousands of deaths and many times more injuries annually. Many countries have death rates of gun violence at or lower than 200. This, as will be shown later, is quite It is reported that out of twenty-seven developed countries, the U.S. has the highest rate of gun deaths and the number is more than forty times larger than the deaths of Great Britain by guns (O’Brien 1). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013, firearms were used in 84,258 nonfatal injuries and homicide deaths reached 11,208, suicide rates of 21,175, and accidental deaths by guns reaching a death count of 505 (23). From these similar high death counts from several different organizations, it is clear that the U.S must impose stricter gun control laws. If countries as developed as the U.S. are achieving low death rates from gun violence what is stopping the U.S. from making the same changes? Why not the U.S. too? By the same token, in an interview between Tiffany O’Callaghan and Garen Wintemute, Wintemute states that “It (guns) takes upward of
It is also a belief that requiring background checks for individuals purchasing weapons at gun shows will stop criminals from possessing guns. This is another misconception. There are over 240 million guns in America. Over 40 percent of all homes in the United States have guns. (Cannon) It would be impossible to enforce any type of legislation to control all of these guns. (Barone) Criminals will be able to obtain guns regardless of any new legislation that is enacted. An example of one of these new laws is the "one gun a month law" that is being introduced in Congress. (Bai 30) Supporters of this law want to make it so no one can purchase more than one gun a month. The intention is that criminals will not be able to go out and buy a bunch of weapons at once and commit a crime. This is ludicrous. The children that committed the high school shootings, and many other crimes that involve guns, were committed with guns that were obtained illegally. (Cloud 35) The only people that will suffer from the "one gun a month law" are the gun manufactures. (Bai 30) This is a bill that is designed to slow their sales and to hurt them financially.
Thesis: We should have Gun-control in laws because it will prevent a lot of problems .
They believe that if background checks were required for private sales, which they describe as “firearms sold at gun shows, through classified newspaper ads, the Internet, and between individuals virtually anywhere” then the “Gun Show Loophole” would be eliminated (Coalition to Stop Gun Violence). As evidenced by the call for an increase in gun control after mass shootings people believe that with stricter gun control, we would have less incidences of gun violence. Gun control advocates argue that if we have stricter gun control then we will have a safer country, with less shootings. According to a study done by the University of Wisconsin and Bowling Green State University between 2005-2007, the number of police officers who “were convicted of firearms violations” were convicted “at a .0002% annual rate” (Fund). According to this study .0002% is “about the same rate as holders of carry permits in states with “shall issue” laws”
Gun violence has reached an all-time high. After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, widespread concern forced legislators to take a second look at our gun laws. When twenty children and six educators were gunned down, many citizens were outraged and begged authorities to pass more stringent gun laws because with fewer guns, there could possibly be fewer incidents involving gun violence. Many people believe that the widespread availability of guns is making society unsafe. Each year, nearly 100,000 Americans are shot, 32,000 of them die, 47 children are shot every day, and eight of them die, according to the U.S. News Digital Weekly. In order to solve this problem, more stringent background checks should be required by all applicants, restriction and enforcement on the sale of guns at gun shows need to improve, and the availability of automatic weapons should be limited.
The second Amendment states, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right to bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This is one of the amendments that uplifted our amazing country. The right to bear arms is an American quality that is strong to build dour nation. Why try to take this away? Gun control policies are an arising problem that the united states face. Taking away guns is not going to prevent major mass shooting, guns are needed for personal safety, and sport shooting is a major industry and community that united states citizens do for a living.
Guns are always represented as a sigh of terror, violence and insecurity due to which, gun control is always being a significant and controversial issue from both political and self defense point of view. Guns and humans had a shared part of the past history, during that period guns were used for hunting and protection from the invaders. The second amendment of the U. S. constitution even made the guns/arms more debatable on the basis of keeping guns as their right. Their is a no harm keeping a gun for self protection under a proper law and order, which will be regulated by different background, physical check and the awareness of proper use of the guns. These checks will help lower down the statistical data of misuse of firearms and reduce
Growing up in Brooklyn, NY I keenly became aware that in my own neighborhood there were educational disparities, street violence, and police brutality. Due to the widespread presence of these issues while walking home from school or going grocery shopping with my mother, I also learned there was internal conflict between the people that lived in the community and those who were appointed to represent them- the congressional representative of my district. My premature awareness of these issues caused me to question who had the ability to solve the problems of my community? I discovered that the television show “Law and Order” offered a possible answer. As the youngest child of my household, my older siblings affinity for the show naturally steered
Gun control is a hot issue in the wake of so many recent, tragic mass shootings. So, what is gun control? Gun control which is also known as firearms regulations refers to laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms. Some people would argue that gun control is generally a widespread of gun ownership that increases the danger of gun violence while others would argue that gun control does not increase the crime rate as far as gun violence; however it does violate individual liberties. Gun control is the heart of the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. The Second Amendment of the Constitution states that citizens have the right to possess and bear arms.
Recently, state legislators and court rulings have made it possible for students on certain college campuses to carry concealed weapons. This is due in part to the shootings that have happened over the years and the increasing threat of unknown enemies. However, the issue has come into question and concern on college campuses. Some argue that guns on campus should be a choice left up to the individual, after all it is their 2nd Amendment right. Others would say that college campuses are a place of learning, a place that does not require firearms at all. Lastly, there are those who say that stricter gun laws would prevent crimes and shootings.
Will gun control stop harm or protect citizens? Today, the opinions of Americans vary on whether guns harm or protect citizens. However, gun control is not a new controversial issue. In 1924, U.S. Senator, Robert La Follete, said, “Our choice is not merely to support or oppose gun control but to decide who can own which guns under what conditions.” This proves that gun control has been a concern to Americans since the mid- twentieth century, and possibly even earlier than that. Even with the U.S. laws limiting the access of guns, it has not stopped the misuse of guns. Thirteen school shootings have been recorded in the United States within the first six weeks of 2014. Gun control is an effort to stop crimes by limiting who can access guns. Guns are very powerful weapons that have a great impact on society. They can change a family’s life forever. The destruction they cause cannot be reversed or taken back, and one trigger could take a person’s life away. For these reasons, government interference is needed to restrict the harm guns can cause. The U.S. government should place more limitations on guns because of the carelessness and misuse of guns, which has led to an increasing number of crimes and violent actions against the innocent.
Mass shootings have become a common occurrence in the United States society and have brought our society's safety debate to the attention of American politics. Both sides of the debate agree that we need more safety precautions but neither side can officially agree on what is to be done. What can we do about the raging number of mass shootings? There is no definite solution for mass shootings but there are precautions the United States can take to try to overcome the overwhelming number of mass shootings occurring. Gun Control is a major topic in the debate of how we can keep our society safer but how is what remains a mystery but we can start with altering the second amendment, and having stronger gun laws and background checks.
