Introduction
With the Black Lives Matter movement on the rise along with reports being filed on Professional Athletes light has been shed on a Social Problem that exist in all cultures which is Domestic Violence. Throughout the world researchers have been on the move to understand the logic behind this impeding Social Problem. Mental Health Challenges of Individuals have often been swept under the rug by society but due to the uprising of reports on Domestic Abuse the world is now forced to take a look into the Challenges that exist with Mental Health a little more seriously. Research suggest that socioeconomic challenges that exist within the community are prevalent to Domestic Violence and it often starts within the home. Health Advocators …show more content…

This research paper will aim to provide an outlook on the Mental Health Challenges of Families faced with Domestic Violence in their homes along with a case study directed toward an African American family
Etiology and Effects on the Family System
Domestic Violence is a pattern of abusive behavior that is used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation. Economic, emotional, psychological, physical, sexual, and verbal tactics are used by perpetrators to control and obtain power over their partners (Miles, 2002). Statistics have shown that one in four women will experience Domestic Violence during their lifetime which makes this a serious epidemic occurring in the United States of America. When Domestic Violence is prevalent in the home of many African American families it is often silenced as appearances are important to the family and counseling is frowned upon. As a result of historical and present day racism, African American women may be less likely to report her abuser or seek help because of discrimination, African American men’s vulnerability to police brutality, and negative stereotyping. (Nash, 2005). Many African American woman elect not to involve law authorities due to fear that nothing will happen. “The fear of police brutality and their overuse of power contributes to the stigma of D.V. being a silent crime within the community” (Jordan, 2015) this logic plays an important role on the mental health of women caught in this
