Communication is one of the most basic skills that humans possess. Every day we talk to people, send text messages, or email one another. We live in a world where there is constant communication available at our fingertips. The question is then, why is society progressively getting worse at communicating with one another? Is it the lack of face to face interaction, or maybe the increase of information available at the touch of a button? So many people in this world are becoming inept at basic communication skills but we keep inventing newer and faster ways of communicating, even our heath care facilities have become computerized. If the patient is in a calm state, then care becomes more effective. A patient will feel this when the relationship between the nurse and themselves reflects consideration, respect, kindness and compassion. Communication can be both verbal and nonverbal but both are equally important. Nonverbal communication can evoke comfort and calmness (Abraham, Jeyakumar, & Babu, 2016, p. 59). For nurses, it is extremely important to be aware of the nonverbal communication we portray. If the nurse stands in the doorway with arms crossed and continues to glance at the clock it will relay to the patient that the nurse has more important and interesting things to do. Patients who interpret the nurses body language in a negative way have an inferior hospital experience. Personal communication between a nurse and the patient is especially important for patients who are enduring stressful and intimidating medical circumstances. Patients who are about to have a procedure may feel scared, worried, or even hopeless. A nurse has the chance to influence these feelings, by being kind, caring, and attentive to their needs (Abraham et al., 2016, p. 59). Nurses may answer patient’s questions, speak calming words to them, or even sit with the patient and allow them to vocalize their feelings about the procedure (Abraham et al., 2016, p. 59). Nurses today need to have excellent communication skills. Receiving information from patients is the most important aspect of nursing. If nurses are unable to communicate with their patient then they would not be able to have a relationship with them. Communication is where two or more people interact with each other, by using sounds and words, this is verbal communication. Some individuals have different behaviors where they try to express themselves to others without using spoken words, this is non verbal communication. Once nurses have the proper communication tools, techniques and evidence based practice, when communicating with their patient, they would get the necessary information needed from the patient to properly diagnosis them.

Xu, staples and Shen define nonverbal communication as “facial expression and body language” and further mentions that communication is a reciprocal process between 2 or more people relaying understanding, ensuring the output is acknowledges and correctly conveyed. Video three’s interview indicates poor non verbal communication between 4:36 and 4:54. The Nurses’ body language is closed, leaning over the interview documents, not facing the patient, nor making eye contact. There are no hand gestures or head nodding to let the patient see visual signs that the communication is being clearly conveyed and comprehended. The Nurse is distracted, twisting her hair in disinterest. While the nurse does use vocal acknowledgement while scratching her head saying “oh yeah, ummmm”, there was no recall of what was said by the patient to confirm a mutual understanding. I will now be evaluating a couple concepts from chapter six of Interplay, in which the focus is on nonverbal communication and how it can communicate meaning to others without the use of words. One of the first concepts that I would like to address is how nonverbal communication is very ambiguous, as it can be interpreted in several different ways. When communication is nonverbal, it is up to the interpretation of the receiver, just as all forms of communication are. However, nonverbal communication is even more so, as with verbal communication thoughts are being voiced, but silence can be interpreted as “warmth, anger, preoccupation, boredom, nervousness, thoughtfulness – The possibilities are many.” (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor, 2015, pg. 176)

Nurses are an equally important part of each client’s life. Nurses provide stable care to each client, answers their questions, gives medications and treatments, and assists with medical procedures. They also have the responsibility to explain to clients and family members what they should and should not do as they go through treatment and recovery. Nurses must quickly respond to patients needs. Every individual nurse has his or her own unique way of caring. There are so many ways to show caring that the possibilities are never ending. Nurse’s support, comfort, and help allow the patients to recover to the best of their ability. Their experiences in dealing with different patients that have unique situations on a daily basis helps the nurses become better caregivers. Any communication interaction involves two major components in terms of how people are perceived: verbal, or what words are spoken and nonverbal, the cues such as facial expressions, posture, verbal intonations, and other body gestures. Many people believe it is their words that convey the primary messages but it is really their nonverbal cues. The hypothesis for this research paper was: facial expressions directly impact how a person is perceived. A brief literature search confirmed this hypothesis.

When proper communication skills are lacking in nursing practice, the chances of errors and risks to the patient’s safety increases. One crucial aspect of communication that affects the patient care outcome is how the nurse and the nursing student interacts and communicates with the physicians and other staff members. If the nurse is not clear and concise when relaying patient information to other members of the healthcare team the patient care may be below the expected quality.
Nonverbal communication is a very important aspect of communication. It can complement and contradict your verbal messages, as well as help regulate conversations. Some examples of nonverbal communication include gestures, facial expressions, touch, and proxemics. Gestures can be simple, such as waving hello, throwing up a peace sign, and even flipping the bird. However, even repetitive habits such as tapping nails on a desk or bouncing your foot up and down are forms of gestures. Also nonverbal communication is the way we use body language and gestures too. Nonverbal communication is often used unconsciously. When using the certain communication it can be misinterpreted also. There are many different categories of nonverbal communication. They are the following: Aesthetics, Artifacts, Chronemics, Haptics, Kinesics, Paralanguage, Physical Appearance, Proxemics, and Oculesics.
Counsellors encounter various, multi-cultural and multi-faceted clients daily and it’s vital that they handle these clients with dignity and respect to have credibility with their them. Most of a Counsellor’s time is spent verbally communicating with their client but the importance of non-verbal communication must be addressed, so that a counsellor can be well-rounded in their approach to treating a client. According to Herring (1990), “Verbal behavior consists of speech, vocalizations, and verbal utterances, accompanied by an intricate set of nonverbal signals providing feedback, illustrations, and synchronization.”
Teaching requires a strong relationship between the teacher and students. Nonverbal communication is vital, if underestimated, in building this trust. Nonverbal communication is “all those elements of a communication which are not essentially linguistic in nature” (Smith, 1979, p. 637). Some aspects of nonverbal communication include eye contact, facial expression, gestures, touch, proximity, posture, vocal qualities, and artifacts (Smith, 1979; Johnson 1999). These all interact with verbal communication and have many meaning that can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. As such, it is up to the teacher to be sure that their intentions are clear.
