Private life is defined as an individual’s physical and mental integrity, personal or private space which also concerns one’s identity, autonomy and sexuality information, relationship with others and one’s reputation. In our life today, governments have been deliberating on the extent of intrusion that should be imposed in their citizens to try to strike a balance between being too strict and being too lenient. Most governments recognize the need to protect the privacy of the citizens to show respect, care and concern for them. Is interfering in the private life the only solution to ensure the safety and security of its citizens? This would allow citizens to live in tranquility. They do not have to worry about losing their lives twenty-four seven. Police forces will be able to carry on with their roles efficiently while ensuring the well-being of the citizens. Without such internal security of the country, its citizens would not feel safe. Take for example, the Singapore government taps on men aged 18 to 23 to protect the country. It is compulsory for men 18 and above to serve National Service (NS) to defend ourselves when attacked, or more importantly to deter foreign intervention and prevent ourselves from being attacked, we need a strong military force. Mr Lee Kuan Yew, introduced NS as he realized that our country cannot depend on other countries forever, we have to defend the country. This is why we have The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Although serving the army means that men would have to commit two years to NS, this would ensure the nation’s and its people’s safety. Nevertheless, it is necessary for men to serve NS to ensure the security and peace in Singapore. ‘If you, who are growing up, do not understand that you have to defend this, then in the end, we will lose. With advanced technology, detecting a person’s whereabouts has become possible. Police forces can review highway agency close circuit televisions on the streets or phone tracking devices. Even though the cameras does not mean interference the private lives of people but conduct a search on their phone devices is deemed to be invading one’s privacy. By having a search warrant, the police would be able to enter one’s house to conduct a search for evidence if necessary.
