Novels, and works of literature in general, are created by authors for the purpose of telling a story. These stories, are developed and gestated within the author 's mind, and as a result are an extension of the author 's own manner of viewing the world around them. To create is to showcase, even if only to oneself, the manners by which one interprets actions and images. A piece of an author can always be found within a literary work, for it is the author describing the world according to their characters, which they have in turn created. Some examples of author 's leaving pieces of their natures within the their literary works include, The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli, We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, and Persepolis by Marjan Satrapi. All of these literary works contain either outright descriptions of the author 's lives through the form of memoirs, or contain distinct similarities between the life of the author and the life of the characters from within their novels. Western culture has often misperceived the east and the way that their society functions. In Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, Satrapi uses graphic novels as a way to demonstrate to the western culture how the east has been misrepresented. The use of media helps to depict to the west how their views of the east may have been unfairly formed in the past. The media has only revealed limited knowledge that only shows partial perspectives because it is difficult to get perspectives of the minorities although they are the ones who hold the most truth. In other words the use of graphic novels and a child’s perspective give the west a new idea on how it is that society in the east functions. This style of writing brings the connection between the two vastly different ideologies closer together through the use of a relatable perspective. Having multiple perspectives of a foreign outlook helps the west to better understand the beliefs of the east and expose the misrepresentation that has been given by the media. It also is important to the way that the west understands that the media has wrongly perceived the ideas of the east and how they can change it.

At one point in the story, the Shah of Iran has left the country, and Marjane’s parents think that they will have new freedoms. Later, however, the country is bombed and fundamentalists occupy the United States embassy. After these events, Marjane is ultimately forced to leave the country without her parents to live in Europe. This was foreshadowed in arguably the most significant panel in Persepolis, the 7th panel on page 43. It features Marjane and her parents, sitting in the family’s living room, the news on a television in the background. They are discussing the fact that the Shah recently left Iran to live in Egypt. Around the panel’s frame is a serpent-like creature. In this panel, Marjane Satrapi uses the frame, and contrasting facial expressions and dialogue to show that the Shah is not the only problem in Iran, foreshadowing the unexpected events of unrest that fill the rest of the story.

This reminds me of colonialism and the changes it brings to the colonized country. Colonialism started with the expedition of the Portuguese and Spanish to discover new wealth. Persepolis, a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, is not a run-of-the-mill comic book. It is written with purpose. Satrapi wrote and illustrated this book to show Americans that their perspective of her home country, Iran, is askew. She believes Americans are too focused on the “fundamentalism, fanaticism, and terrorism” (Satrapi ii), of the nation and that they forget to notice the normality and humanness of it.
