What is Courage? If you looked in a dictionary you would find that it would say, "courage is a quality that enables one to face danger or pain without showing fear". Harper Lee, in her book To Kill a Mockingbird, truly understands courage and all of its many different forms. There are many different characters in the novel who commit courageous acts of both big and small. Whether it be ancient Mrs.Dubose, wise Atticus Finch, or mysterious Boo Radley, the theme of courageous acts even with great opposition is displayed numerous times throughout this story.
The first example of unlikely courage is seen in the foil character, Mrs. Dubose. Though at first seeming to be one of the many examples of the town folk's hostility and abuse towards the Finch's Mrs. Dubose's character quickly reveals it's true purpose. Jem, due to a vandalizing incident, has been forced to read, by Atticus, every day to Mrs. Dubose. Courage is a deed that can be portrayed in many ways. In the Historical Fiction novel To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, there are many acts of racism and problematic cases where acts of courage are demonstrated in different and unique ways that can only be deciphered if one reads in between the lines of the words. There are three characters in particular who show courage in diverse ways. First, there is Arthur Radley who anonymously shows courage by performing tasks that cause him to face the outside world where he’s been isolated from for so long. Secondly, there is Scout Finch who demonstrates courage through her adolescent age. Lastly, there is Atticus Finch who displays courage through his selfless and kind actions. Therefore, in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses diverse characters to represent different acts of courage.
Courage is the ladder on which other themes in to kill a mockingbird mount on. With courage people tend to take risks, have strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. How many times have you considered yourself as courageous? At the end of the novel, you see reasons why being courageous could help you as a reader live a better and braver life. Also this book contains characters with impressive personalities, but in contrast there are many characters with poor qualities and personalities. Back in the 30s, when a negro faced a white man in a courtroom, the white man will win whether he is lying or not. This would give many negros tons of fear. In addition to this book, there is a lot of mystery within the story. For example, there is a very mysterious character in the story. In the form of courage, there are many situations where characters defy odds and take huge chances for little reward. There will be 3 subjects about qualities or feelings of fear and courage. They are about the Radley family, Bob Ewell and Tom Robinson.
Courage means overcoming obstacles to do what is right, Atticus is a generous person that is a great role-model, and knows courage. Atticus demonstrates courage about everyday in his life. Once, when Atticus was talking to Jem and Scout after he told the children Mrs. Dubose died. He said real courage “'Its when you know you're licked before you begin buy you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what,”'(Lee112). In this quote Atticus demonstrates a great example of courage to Scout and Jem. When he is talking about Mrs. Dubose. In the process he reminds himself why he took the Tom Robinson case that, he knew he had no chance in winning. He knew if he took the case he wouldn't be as close with his friends and neighbors until the trail was over. In the end Atticus stood up for what he felt was right against the while people, and that is real courage! Another character that shows courage by overcoming and obstacle to do what is right is Mrs. Dubose. She has been sick for so long that she wanted the pain to go away, and once she got the pain to disappear she overused the medicine. Courage is not something that we are born with, it is a skill that takes time to learn and only a few are lucky enough to have it. To Kill a Mockingbird is not only about life in a world full of hate, it is about standing up for anyone’s beliefs being brave enough to do it. In this story, Harper Lee says “Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (Lee 112). In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee illustrates courage through Atticus Finch, Mrs. Dubose, and Arthur Radley.
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” To accomplish anything, one must overcome his fears. Atticus Finch thinks courage is to know that you are going to lose, but continue follow through the entire way. His mindset is to never give up, even when you know and everyone else knows you are not going to succeed at what you are doing. I agree with Atticus Finch’s definition of courage of that even though all odds are against you, you have to follow through and persevere.
Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird we learn about moral courage through a few characters, but Atticus and Ms. Dubose are characters who really make Jem and Scout discover that courage looks different than they expect it to. Atticus shows moral courage by defending and guarding Tom Robinson, and Ms. Dubose shows moral courage by getting off morphine. Courage comes in many forms, but moral courage is the most important form.
Atticus Finch demonstrates both moral and physical courage through his decisions of taking on and fighting Tom Robinson’s case, despite all the critics and setbacks, by putting his own life at risk to protect his client and doing all in his power to bring justice. In conclusion, true courage is the ability to confront something even if one is “licked” from the start. Tom Robinson, Mrs. Dubose, and Atticus Finch all display real courage throughout Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Tom Robinson, being an African-American, living in a prejudiced town and having a crippled arm, still helped Mayella, gave a truthful testimony and tried to escape prison. Mrs. Dubose courageously overcame her morphine addiction despite her age and pain.

"Real courage" is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose. Atticus fits into this definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it several times throughout the novel.

Atticus was incredibly courageous taking on tom Robinsons case against the prejudice of Macomb County and he shows incredible courage when he says, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try and won.
