In Star Wars: A New Hope, Darth Vader and the Emperor, users of the dark side of the force, are evil villains and Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi, users of the light side of the force, are the heroes. Does this automatically mean that the dark side is evil and the light side is good, though? There is no disputing that Darth Vader and the emperor are both evil men. The prevalence of balance throughout the Star Wars universe is evident from the beginning. All through the series “The Force” is referenced to as a delicate balance that needs to be kept in order. Although “The Force” is referenced as being strong with one character or another, it would appear that both sides of it, Light and Dark, seem to equal out. Yoda hints at this by denying that the dark side of the force is stronger than the light side (Episode V). The Force is also a balance within oneself that can easily switch from Light to Dark if a Jedi is unwary. While in the Dagobah system, Luke is warned by Yoda to “Beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny”. This balance is an essential part of the Star Wars universe just as it is in the real world.
