What does a teacher do? Well, besides giving out tons of papers, numerous tests, and stories that the students aren't interested in reading (or just too lazy to read), teachers are responsible for creating the future leaders of tomorrow. In today's society one may find advancement difficult without a formal education. Education is one of society's institutions that helps to infuse in our younger generation the norms, values and morals of the world we live in. Teachers lead their students on the trip to success. Have you ever wondered how you would have gotten where you are today, or how you will get where you will be tomorrow without a great instructor? According to a private pedagogical survey of sources (teachers and students), some of the main qualities of teachers should be discipline, motivation, and above all, respect. I have interviewed three teachers and three students from the High School, Middle School, and Elementary School levels.
How do we define discipline? When most people hear the word "discipline" they imagine an eighty year old, six foot five matron holding a long stick, preparing to give some outspoken child his just punishment. In modern terms, having a disciplined classroom is simply the act of maintaining structure and consistency in the working environment. Discipline is hard to achieve in a class where the teacher and students are viewed as equals. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels concocted the idea of Marxism, or Communism, in the mid-1800s, and this philosophy was one of the most influential ideologies of the time period, influencing many European political leaders such as Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov and Joseph Stalin. This brings up a question that historians have disputed for decades: who followed the Marxist policy more closely: Stalin or Lenin? Even though the rules of Stalin and Lenin were both based off of the concept of Communism, Lenin added on to it in the interest of the Russian people while Stalin modified parts of it to his personal benefit. Before it can be decided who was more Marxist, the doctrines of Marxism must be looked at. Marx and Engels collected their ideas in a book called The Communist Manifesto. This document outlines the principles of Marxism, which can be summed up in ten main points. First, private property and ownership of land by individuals shall become illegal. Second, income tax shall be adjusted according to the income of the individual; more income meant higher tax, and less income meant lower tax. Individual inheritance shall become nonexistent. Anyone who was not favorable to society would have their property taken away; this included foreign immigrants and rebels. The bank system shall be centralized into one national bank, and all individual money shall be placed in this bank. Transportation and communication shall be controlled by the government. The government shall gain increased holdings in the control of factories and other production facilities such as farms. In a society where kids must go to school up to the collegiate level, teaching is an impactful career choice. Teachers help contour the minds of future leaders of the world. Furthermore, teachers play a crucial role in guiding students to the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to succeed in life, and teachers lead students to make informed decisions on any topic the meet in the future. As a teacher, a person must relinquish their knowledge onto students. Finally, they must prepare their students for all the obstacles they will face later in life.
Successful teachers develop the whole child by making integrated efforts to promote their student’s academic, social and emotional learning. Children need to be aware of themselves and others; make responsible decisions, and be ethical and respectful of the people around them.
The Prentice Hall’s Self-Assessment Online Library contained different assessments that revelead different scores for personality traits and their relation to the workplace. The assessment contained 3 areas of focus, individual evaluation of self, working with others, and life in organizations. After completing the assessments a score was calculated and results were provided. First, I will briefly discuss my results from the various assessments. Organization behavior is important to study in the workplace to understand different behaviors, roles and structure. If we can recognize our strengths, then we can identify our weakness. Discipline is intended to cease misbehavior in the classroom. Effective classroom management procedures contribute to an environment that enhance learning and reduce discipline problems (Edwards, 2004). The goal of discipline is to help students learn to control their own behavior. Effective teachers apply various disciplinary techniques that help in curtailing misbehavior and promote self-discipline in students (Charles, 1996). Effective discipline is emotionally disconnected from student actions (Henley, Ramsey and Algozzine, 1999). According to Dreikurs, discipline is a process in which students learn to impose reasonable limits on themselves (Charles, 1996).
What is a teacher? A teacher is someone who students rely on for further knowledge and comprehension. Often, a teacher is viewed as a role model towards their students. In many times, teachers can help guide students into a better future. Characteristics like preparation, compassion, having and showing respect to students can make a teacher more effective.
Discipline plays a key part in education. Respect from your students will make the classroom a better atmosphere. Rules should be established on the first day. Rules should be a thoughtful process so they can be carried out to be affective, but logical consequences. We do not want the students self esteem to be damaged.
