For this assignment I had the pleasure of interviewing my mentor. A gentleman that I truly admire for his endless efforts and never say enough attitude, I find him to be nothing less than the working backbone to an education system. A man that has given his life to his career in order to ensure an amazing future for all students to come. My mentor Mr. Hardy Keith Edwards. Hardy is an educator for the Compton Unified School District, he is a specialist in English language arts and a long term Substitute teacher. Along with those two demanding roles Mr. Edwards also wears the hat of Lyft Driver, Creative Consultant for the American Aesthetics Academy, and Author/Writer of an amazing soulful book of poetry titled Pepper Grease, and his greatest most heart filled role of caretaker for his grandmother.
When I went to ask Hardy about his career choice and why he decided to pick education as a main focus he simply smiled and told me that he wanted to more effectively address the deficits that he has seen and those which we know statistically exist on the areas academic prophecy and overall career employability. I found this answer to be sort of heartwarming. As a male coming out of South Central where majority of professionals has given up on our youth, here was a man willing to dedicate his life to turning these statistics around and fight for our future. It is a battle that has been the center of the problem for years for our community youth that feel there is no higher goals to be set. Truly and answer of value and one that I truly appreciated.

I can see that he is a person that fully dedicated himself into his work for a higher success, which is something I truly value about our partnership, I feel we both have a drive that is very unmatched by the average bystanders. I recently had the pleasure to spend the day in Mr. Edwards’s class, and as amazing as the experience was I do not feel I am fit for this kind of career choice. Though we both have similar goals of progressing our youth and communities I wish to do it through health care while he educates and expands the depth of grey matter that is the glory of our brains by the masses. Furthermore; as I plan to continue learning under Hardy I am taking away most, his formula for success, an aphorism that is comprised of joy and peace abundantly shared in a more enriched life.

An outstanding educator possesses unique qualities that set him or her apart from others in the field. Ask any student about a favorite teacher and listen intently as he or she describes that person with a smile. Ask a parent of a child who will enter first grade in the fall about the teacher choice for their child. The parent would describe the outstanding educator in their desire for that special teacher. The qualities of an outstanding educator are easily recognized by those whose lives they touch, shape, and change on a daily basis. It is in this writing piece that they will be described and discussed.
In summary, I believe an effective teacher has the most influence on an effective school. Because of this, I consider Cooper’s characteristics centered on effective teaching as most important. I do also believe that fostering effective teaching skills through effective professional development programs are essential to creating an effective school. Furthermore, I would not discount the roles of non-teachers in the school setting, as they contribute to a school’s overall effectiveness too.
I have been a classroom teacher with the same school division (and its legacy divisions) for twenty two years. I have therefore, been an active participant and witness to the multitude of changes and growth that have enveloped the realm of education and my school division. My role in the classroom has mainly included English and Arts instruction at the grade 11 and 12 levels. I have considered it an honor to be one of the last teachers involved in a student’s K-12 education and have deeply recognized this important leadership role, guiding our students by way of instruction and by example, through their final educational stretch and empowering them to be leaders themselves. I feel that I have helped to create a society of learners where students are being constantly challenged, where they experienced meaningful personal and educational growth and were empowered to celebrate their accomplishments whether they were big or small.

Harper’s presentation, he discussed the importance of mentoring. He also discussed some myths of being a mentor and how to be successful and bold. To be successful and bold Mr. Harper said that a person should ask for what they want in life. “Closed mouths don’t get fed” is a popular expression that describes exactly what Mr. Harper was talking about. An individual cannot be scared to ask for what they want in life, because the worst thing that they can be told is no. He also said that people should treat every interaction as an interview. This means making your best first impression whenever speaking to anyone, because every moment is a networking opportunity.
For the assignment, I interviewed Mr. David Sable. Mr. Sable is the Executive Director of Student Services for Radford City School. Mr. Sable oversees Special Education programs, 504 programs, food services programs, homelessness, and he is the division testing coordinator. My leadership journey began after I attended an initial special education eligibility meeting in 2011. Before the eligibility meeting, I never even thought about educational leadership. I envisioned myself as always being a teacher, and nothing more. My decision to attend this particular eligibility meeting was the best professional decision I have ever made. I have learned that I am not the amazing communicator I once thought I was. I have many skills to practice and develop to become an effective communicator. Discovering my working style has allowed me to look more closely at my roles in various groups at work and understand why these groups don’t always work. As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. One of the main reasons I want to become an educator is because I feel education has really lost teachers who truly love teaching and those who truly love teaching and those who have the desire to make a difference. I feel I can really help make a difference in the education world and bring back the love to teach.
I chose education as my career path because I hope to be able to make a small difference in a child’s life. Time and time again I have seen children being educated poorly and/or not having appropriate role models in their life. I feel that an educator must not only be able to convey to the student the classroom material, but also be a counselor, coach, mentor, and a parent. Failing to fulfill these roles gives a child the chance to slip through the educational system without having the opportunity to influence them to some degree.
Those who look to the profession as a career would need to nourish these perceptions in order to prevail over the negative aspects that surround the profession. The process of teaching goes far beyond the presentation of facts, it includes the dedication of both heart and time. While compensation and working conditions are the main downfalls in teaching, there are many other situations that cause individuals to turn away from the profession. Teaching is obviously a hard complex job and the individuals who answer the call, encounter many frustrations. They are required to first develop goals for classroom instruction and with these goals develop lesson plans, while implementing effective classroom management (appropriate discipline).
