In the story "The Persian Carpet" by Hanan Shaykh, Shaykh uses contrast to display her differentiating personalities toward her mother’s betrayal and uses paralleling events to illustrate her frustrations towards her mother. Hanan, her younger sister, and her aunt Maryam quietly visit their separated mother; whom Hanan dearly misses "I had missed her and wished that she would come back…". Although, Maryam told Hanan to stick to the plan; to show no emotion in seeing her mother, yet, Hanan couldn't succeed because she felt the need to show compassion and affection to her mother. As Hanan enters her mother’s new residence, Hanan froze and was in a state of shock that her mother kept possession of the carpet ‘As I stared down at the floor I froze. In. confusion 1 looked at the Persian carpet spread on the floor, then gave my mother a long look.’ In conclusion, Hanan’s heart was torn apart due to her mother’s disloyalty of stealing the Persian carpet of her childhood. Ironically, Hanan’s childhood was lifted by that carpet, but by all means, Hanan’s childhood is now shattered because of her mother’s thievery. In the midst of the night, the time the carpet was lost; before her mother’s divorce, Hanan’s mother in an outcry stated that it was Ira; the half blinded man’s flaw that the carpet was stolen. And Ira could be heard in sobbing claim; he was surprised to be hearing inductive reasoning from Hanan’s mother as there is no evidence to back up Hanan’s mother’s claim. It gave Hanan a feeling of uneasiness that her mother was not in fact not saying the truth due to using the blind man are the fall guy. During the incident, the blind man said to Hanan “"Never mind, child." Then he- turned round to leave. I thought I saw tears on his cheeks.” This signals that Ira was about to tell the truth that Hanan’s mother stole the carpet, but he felt the need to keep quiet due to the general public not believing in him. To conclude, Hanan was aware of the fact that Ira was in fact the truth teller and her mother was the real
