On a recent trip to France, my husband and I walked along a tiny and adorable bridge in the thousand-year-old town of l’Isle Adam, situated 20 miles north of Paris. Upon stopping to look down at the sun-dappled waterway beneath us, I noticed a pair of elongated shadows, along with the unexpected sight of three velvet white swans, elongated necks in artful, question-mark repose.
“Whose shadows are those?” I asked my husband.
“That’s us,” he said, waving to prove his point.
I chuckled embarrassingly. “Oh, right!” Why hadn’t I recognized myself?
I’ve been pondering that question ever since. Right there in that same pond, ducks swam, dipped their heads in the water, shook off the excess and preened; large goldfish swirled about, grazing at

“Ooo, look at that creature!” I pulled out my phone and recorded the whole thing. Let me explain that I live in deadly fear of rats, deem them horrid and loathsome. I know rats are God’s creatures and all, but isn’t God the same one who invented pedophiles? OK, different discussion. But just to make the point about my aversion to rodents, Mickey Mouse is creepy to me. Just go to Disneyland, and there he is—a six-foot vermin who smiles a lot. Am I wrong? My point is the water rat did not repulse me, as it should have—at least not totally. Again, I didn’t recognize …show more content…
I, the peacenik, earnestly debated this notion with friends, who did not treat me as they might a lunatic. And then I came to my senses. Right! Send in the drones; while we’re at it, kill the remaining half of Syrian citizens there, create a few more ISIS recruits, and sit by while Bashar al-Assad gets asylum in a cushy palace somewhere in Russia. America always gets it so right in the Middle East! I sure don’t have the answer to this developing catastrophe, but I know that scenario won’t bring the fix we seek. I fail to recognize the woman who walked around, however briefly, in bullet-scented skin, indulging in war-tainted deliberations.
At times, it is our friends who become unrecognizable. You will observe a kind, supportive and loyal person, whom you love fiercely metamorphose into a blanched shade of her former self. Or, the shade darkens to impenetrable black until only confusion and suspicion remain.
We all fluctuate as we live, at times evolving, at others regressing. The perilous act of self-examination can be daunting, exhilarating, frightening and complicated, usually all at once. As I age, I often
In 1970, a national survey said 70% of Americans believed “homosexuals are dangerous as teachers or youth leaders because they try to get sexually involved with children” (Herek). The idea that homosexuals are prone to child molestation has lessened in later years, however, another poll taken in 1999 stated 19% of heterosexual men and 10% of heterosexual women believed gay men are likely to molest children (Herek). Catholic officials are considering whether to ordain homosexuals as priests. This debate has been sparked by allegations, mostly by young boys and men, that priests sexual molested them. The Boy Scouts of America have declared homosexuals are not welcome in their organization, despite the fact that scoutmasters accused of molestation tend to be married. Fundamentalist Christians are determined to keep homosexuals away from children, claiming, “homosexuals molest children at a much higher rate than heterosexuals” (Traditional). This assertion is wrong, and an unfounded stereotype. Homosexuals are no more prone to child molestation than anyone else. In this paper, I will show the lack of a correlation between homosexuality and child molestation.
Megan 's Law is a law that was passed for kids being molested. “Child abuse laws exist on the federal, state and local levels. Legislation serves to keep children free from exploitation, harm, and danger. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), passed by the federal government in 1974 and reauthorized in 2010 is the largest body of legislation with regard to the fair, ethical and legal treatment of children and is intended to keep them free from all forms of abuse including physical, sexual, emotional and psychological..As of March 2012, there are also 18 states whose laws require all citizens with knowledge or suspicion of abuse to report it the proper authorities. The law also states the penalties for failing to report abuse.
The value of a woman as a mother, wife, sister, daughter or aunt has been replaced for sexual please. Greed and perversion disguised as men chose to debase America’s women and children for their own selfish gain. Child sexual exploitation is the most hidden form of child abuse in the U.S. and North America today. It is the nation’s least recognized epidemic. The overwhelming majority of children forced to sell their bodies on the street are girls. Young boys face hardship and abuse as well, but they often fend for themselves to survive. The girls, on the other hand, inevitably fall victim to pimps and organized trafficking networks. (Sher, pg. V)
There are a number of benefits to be found from thinking about ageing as a lifelong process and not just one that affects older people. This essay will define some of these benefits whilst backing up this reasoning with reference to the K118 material. It will then explain briefly which experiences I have had personally which have led me to responding to the question in this manner.
SUMMARY: The Syrian Civil War between the Syrian government, and the insurgents, as well as the Free Syrian Army has been escalating since early 2011. The United States, and our allies have faced difficulty in sending aid to Syria, and continue to deal with obstacles in sending even basic medications to Syrian civilians. However, the United States and its allies have also contributed to the lack of organization and the disparity in Syria by sending aid and artillery to individuals based only on political connection, and ignoring organization, local alliances, and without a true understanding of the reality of the Syrian localities to best protect the Syrian protestors. The question addressed in this memo will be defining the viable options to be pursued in Syria, how to pursue them, and assessing the most beneficial path of least resistance when offering aid, funds, and artillery to specific groups in the country. The recommendation will be that although the best alternative action item would be to choose a Syrian group with the least oppositional values comparative to the United States to fund, supply with arms, and train; that the United States should do nothing for the time being. Given the physical and financial risk involved with the Syrian Civil War, it would be prudent for the United States to simply observe how the war progresses over the next several months, as well as complete some research to truly understand the state of affairs in local areas of Syria to determine the extent to which the United States could identify a group to provide aid to, as well as the extent to which the United States involvement would be within Syria.
Aging and old age for a long time presented as dominated by negative traits and states such as sickness, depression and isolation. The aging process is not simply senescence most people over the age of 65 are not Senile, bedridden, isolated, or suicidal (Aldwin & Levenson, 1994). This change in perspective led the investigation of the other side of the coin. Ageing is seen as health, maturity and personal Royal growth, self-acceptance, happiness, generatively, coping and acceptance of age-related constraints (Birren & Fisher, 1995). Psychological und...
This reflection paper is based on the life history interview conducted on me and a 78-year-old woman who is soon going to celebrate her 79th birthday on Sep 21st. I would call her with a fictitious name “Smita” in the entire paper to maintain and protect her privacy. The interview was about our life. It was divided into six major life categories: childhood, adulthood, identity, the present, aging, and life lessons. Having an opportunity to interview a 78-year-old woman and writing this reflective paper about the life history and experiences had made me realize that I have a lot to learn about the stages of human life. Every individual lives are different and it varies tremendously. As an interviewee my goal was to collect the details of life, different stories, and experiences that makes our life unique from the rest of the people.
The Syrian Civil War is a good example of world leaders playing by the rules of realism. The civil war began in March of 2011 as part of the Arab Spring, and by July of 2012 17,000 have died and another 170,000 fled the country (Almond). The United Nations Security Council in February of 2012 had tried t...
Ageing is a continuing life cycle, it is an ongoing developmental event that brings certain changes in one’s own psychological and physical state. It is a time in one's own life where an elderly individual reminisce and reflect, to bask and live on previous accomplishments and begin to finish his life cycle. There is a significant amount of adjusting that requires an elderly individual to be flexible and develop new coping skills to adapt in the changes that are common in their new life. (Dhara & Jogsan, 2013).
“Though the age boundaries are not set in stone, we will consider middle adulthood as the developmental period that begins at approximately 40 to 45 years of age and extends to about 60 to 65 years of age” (Santrock, 2013, p. 485). I interviewed two individuals for this paper. Each person was asked the same fifteen questions (Appendix). I interviewed a male and a female who fell in the midrange of middle adulthood.
As human beings age, according to Erik Erikson, they go through developmental stages that help to create and transform their personalities. If needs are met and the ego is gratified, then the individual is able to move on to the next challenge. Onward they march in life and in stage until they find the end level: integrity versus despair. This has been categorized as adults 65 years and older by Erikson. Here, people are to reminisce and judge their lives in terms of merit or disappointment. Erikson himself had a lot to comb through in his later years.
Aging and being old was dominated by negative characteristics and conditions such as illness, depression, and isolation for a long time (Eibach, Mock, & Courtney, 2010). At first glance the terms “success” and “aging” seem to be in conflict to each other. When asking people about aging, their answers have many facets that are also found in psychological definitions: successful aging is seen as health, maturity and personal growth, self-acceptance, happiness, generativity, coping, and acceptance of age-related limitations. In the psychological sense successful aging is also often seen as the absence of age-associated characteristics (Strawbridge, Wallhagen, & Cohen, 2002). It seems that successful aging means is not aging.
According to Witkavitch (2010) life is about change and as human beings we’re always changing, growing, transforming and transitioning our lives. Our whole life is made up of change. It is relative to time and a natural component of our everyday life. Things change, they grow, they develop, they die, and something else shows up. There are many changes that can occur during a person’s lifetime. For instance, we all were once kids who changed into adults. With that said, as we age, dreams change. There will always be something new in life and we can’t expect everything to fall in place as we wish because the future is constantly changing. In the age of globalization, information and communication revolution changes are affecting our lifestyles, our ways of thinking, feelings and the way we act. Life changes everyday for a person in some way. Just like we expect the seasons to change and children to grow older. Some changes are very small and can affect your life in an enormous way. However, other events can be very important and could change your whole life such as getting married, getting arrested, having a baby, and even losing a close friend or relative. The important events that altered my life are coming the United States, playing club soccer, becoming a U.S. citizen, going to graduate school and studying abroad. In this in paper, I will discuss how these phases transformed my life physically and mentally.
Furthermore, Levinson classifies the novice phase into the early adulthood transition stage (17-22 years), entering the adulthood world (22-28 years), and age-30 transition (28-33 years). On the other hand, the culminating phase encompasses the settling down stage (33-40 years) and midlife transition stage (40-45 years of age). Nevertheless, adulthood is composed of middle-aged period (45-65 years) and late adulthood period entailing the age of 65 years and beyond. Some experts in developmental psychology have gone further to classify the late adulthood period into young-old stage (65-85 years) and old-old stage (85 and above years of age) (Newton, 1994; Levinson, 1978). However, it suffices to emphasize that these stages only exist as a guide to showcase normal development occurring in a continuum, since not everyone develops through displayed stages at exactly similar
What do you feel when you see a sunset? Warm, happy, amazed, awe-inspired? The sun rose yesterday, and will again tomorrow, and will again the day after that, it’s not as if the sunrise is a miraculous event, yet the emotions are visceral. It’s beautiful, and this strikes a deep, primal chord inside. John Berger attempts to unravel this mysterious attraction to beauty in his essay, “The White Bird”. The white bird in question is a small, wooden carving of a white bird, hung in the kitchens of certain cultures that experience long winters, such as the Haute Savoie region in France. According to Berger, the birds are an attempt to hold onto the fleeting beauty of nature, and a reminder of the spring to come. “Nature is energy and struggle. It
