“The Patriot” follows the journey of Benjamin Martin, a veteran soldier and a widower with seven children, who is called to fight against the British Army so the colonies could gain independence. Set in the 1770’s when the United States was still under the control of the British Empire ruled by King George III, America went into a civil war against the British as colonists began rejecting the ideals set by Britain. During this time the United States was still known as the Thirteen American Colonies, today these colonies are the east coast states of America. Although the film is fictional and depicts characters and events that aren’t historically accurate, we still get an insight of the struggles colonist lived through in order to obtain independence. …show more content…

The soldiers of the British Army were very loyal and never hesitated when given commands even when the commands went against their own beliefs. When the battle on Martin’s concluded and the wounded of both parties were being taken care of a calvary of British Dragoons arrived and ordered that all the Continental soldiers be killed and the house be burned. The British lieutenant was hesitant at first as Martin’s was gracious enough to care for the British soldiers, but since he was loyal to Britain he obliged to the orders given. Prior to the Battle of Cowpens, one of the soldiers from the militia army was a black man that originally fought for his freedom, however due to his loyalty to the army he went back and fought for America. He did not want to lose his freedom he worked extremely hard for only to have it taken away. As the battle concluded the American’s came out victorious and the British Army was forced to retreat. Eventually as the British continued to lose against the strong willed Americans, the British Army officially surrendered in Yorktown, Virginia.
