The Past and the Future in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

In the hit album Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Roger Waters shows his longing for the past in the song “Vera.” In order to fully understand this, you will need some background knowledge on Roger Waters. Waters’ father fought and died in World War II, leaving this two-year-old boy without a father. Not having a father would later prove to have negative impacts on the life and happiness of Waters. The lyrics of “Vera,” while they are confusing, are very meaningful. “Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn? Remember how she said that we would meet again some sunny day?” The Vera Lynn referenced by Roger Waters was a popular singer in the early 1940’s. Her lyrics talked about how after World War II, things would be restored to the way they were before. These lyrics brought hope to the British people who, at the time, were being bombed on a daily basis. After having some background knowledge on who Vera is and the life of Roger Waters’, it becomes plain to see that Waters is striving for a life before his father was killed. This time is far behind him and will never be reached, but Waters still hopes for it, just as Gatsby hopes for a time with Daisy even though it is far behind him. Which brings me to the theme of this paper; some people work so hard to bring back the past, but only throw away the future. This theme is seen in the lives of people throughout society of any age, even in the fictional 1920’s.
First, it will be shown that Gatsby worked so hard for a dream that was already behind him.

... in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter — tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther . . . And one fine morning — So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” 180
Gatsby didn’t want to give up on the dream because once the dream was lost, Gatsby’s life would then lose purpose and he would no longer have a drive to live. So instead, he continued to try.
Finally, after all of these things have been realized, the reader arrives at the theme; some people work so hard to bring back the past, but only throw away the future. This can be seen in the life of Roger Waters trying to bring back his father regardless of him being long since gone, Jay Gatsby trying to be with Daisy, and in the lives of those who have a dream lost somewhere in the past.
