The Paradigm of the Periphery in Native North America by Christopher Bolfing discusses the movement of ideas, symbolism, religious ideology, and political forms after they disappear from their core centers to prove cultural survival in the periphery. Written in 2010 and supervised by Dr. Reilly, this thesis uses societies of the Greater Southeast area, such as Cahokia, Moundville, Etowah, and Lake Jackson, to provide evidence of the movement of ideas through the use of the “Paradigm of the Periphery” model. Bolfing’s organization, use of diagrams, and evidence are strengths within his paper, however, using too broad of an area and gatekeeping phrases weaken the argument. While Bolfing’s idea is interesting and seems valid, the area and concepts he is trying to cover are too extensive to accurately define by one thesis. Originally his focus seems to be solely on the movement of religion and spiritual ideas, however, Bolfing later attempts to incorporate political structures and social working of the societies he picked. While it is likely these structures can be transferred through the Periphery Model as well, doing so now lost the true point of the argument. Instead of trying to prove his model, Bolfing’s paper became more about the areas he used as examples which clouded the idea. Further, many of his phrases became redundant as they circled back on themselves with unnecessary words. Many of the problems with the thesis could be solved by condensing the information to make the argument …show more content…

Many of the faults I saw in Bolfing’s work are some I know I am prone to make as well. Seeing them in someone else’s paper has reminded me to stay focused, clearly state my point, and make sure my idea does not get lost in other points. Likewise, I need to focus my idea down into a more coherent topic. Since both of our topics are based in cultural anthropology, finding resources to back up my idea clearly will be very important so as to avoid concluding what I want instead of what is true. I also want to include pictures and diagrams to better illustrate my point. Lastly, it is helpful to see that it is possible to finish a thesis that has
