What are the difference’s between successful people and unsuccessful people. Two ideas are that they are born like this and can’t do nothing to change it, but a different idea is that your outside surroundings can affect how someone turns out. In the book The Other Wes Moore it shows extrinsic factors. To as how one of the Wes’s turned out successful Whereas the other one didn't. An example of this idea that one's environment can change how successful people become. Like Author Wes had extrinsic factors is the wealth of his family and the opportunities he had. His mother had to intervene after she saw all of wes’s actions and who he was becoming sh then decided to intervene and gather money from her family, but still fell short.Wes’s mother still after asking every relative for money still didn't have enough money to send Wes to military school knowing the situation his grandparents made the decision to pay for his tuition with their retirement money. Like at first Author Wes had lived in a bad neighborhood in a rural part of Baltimore but his environment the changed when they sent him to Military school changing the way he acted and making him a completely different person making him successful. The book basically talks about two young boys both with the name Wes Moore, who grew up in Baltimore and in the same neighborhood but never knew of each others existence. This is until the author Wes Moore, the one who escaped his rough childhood in Baltimore and the Bronx, began meeting with the other Wes Moore and questioning him who is spending his life in prison because of attempted murder. The author Wes Moore who managed to escape his situation growing up had a much more supportive mother who moved him away from Baltimore and continued to push him to get an education. The novel Makes Me Wanna Holler discuss the problems of the black Americans from an insider prospective. When I say black Americans, I mean from the cultural issues, fatherhood, family, and how blacks working class families are anything, but lazy. Nathan recalls his troubled childhood, rehabilitation while in prison, and his success with the Washington Post. The novel helped me understand the mindset of black males and why some choose to be affiliated with gangs. The text provided from The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, I found that one of the central ideas is that the older brother, Tony is rying to change Wes not to be like him, but he is not doing a great job tellim him. IN the third paragraph it states, “Before Wes could even finish his sentence, Tony cocked back his arm, and punched him dead in the face”. Although I grew up with both my parents, my dad was working a 12 hour shift, so he could provide for all his children. Even though I had the love of both my parents, I chose to hang out with my neighbors most of the day. The neighborhood I lived in was full of drugs, violence, and money. I wasn’t really into the violence part. My dad was working all day just so we could have the things we required. I didn’t want to waist our family’s money so I would never ask my Mom or Dad for any. I started hustling anything I had or could get my hands on. It was a bad decision but at the time I wasn’t thinking about the consequences. I was just trying to get my hands on a lot of money. I started robbing places and people, and ended up getting arrested a couple times. Before I started to realize that in the long run, it would turn out for the worst. The first time I got arrested, I didn’t even care. I just wanted to get done with the process of everything, and get back to what I was doing. My mind was set to think “Damn how could you make a silly mistake, and get caught like that.” My mother was totally shocked when she found out that I was getting into trouble, because I hadn’t gotten any complains from school for bad behavior, or bad grades, and I had never let my mom know that I was doing all these useless stuff. Ultimately I got sent to boarding school and now have completely switched up my life. My environment was having a big affect on my life. I learned from my mistakes and I am making a better future for myself. I don’t regret much because, I have gained so much knowledge from the wrong things I did in my life. For instance, Phillip becomes friends with a black man and climbing a coconut tree while blind. Mayo deciding to stay and protect his home. Timothy and Lurhetta play a big role in shaping the novels’ plot because they show the main characters that racial biases are irrelevant in their current time and situation. The two novels are symbolic of man’s fight against nature. In Phillips and Timothy’s case it is the struggle to live on the cay and survive a massive hurricane while the Higgins face losing their home to landslides. Outliers-The Story of Success is a sociological, and psychological non-fiction book, which discusses success, and the driving reasons behind why some people are significantly more successful than others. Malcolm Gladwell explains this by dividing the book into two parts, opportunity and legacy. Opportunity discusses how select people are fortunate enough to be born between the months of January through March, and also includes the idea that those who are already successful will have more opportunities to improve and become even more successful. The 10,000-hour rule proves the idea that in order to become successful in a certain skill, one must have practiced that skill for at least 10,000 hours. In addition to the 10,000-hour rule, timing is also a major component that implies being in the right place at the right time, which brings the author to discuss Bill Gates who was born during the time where programming and computer technology was emerging, therefore sparking his interest in computers, later bringing him to create Microsoft. Another point Gladwell brings forth is the notion of one’s upbringing, race, and ethnicity can be a factor behind their success. And lastly, pursuing meaningful work will cause one to continue working with their skill and not give up. Legacy is a collection of examples that support the idea: values are passed down from generation to generation, which may cause a certain group of people to be more persistent in a skill, or occupation.

As a child of two parents who would be considered “successful” by society, I’ve always wondered how differently I would perform in life had I been the child of different people or raised in a different environment. I’d heard plenty of stories about people coming from bad childhoods or being raised by unsupportive parents and still succeeding, but my question was, how common is this? How often is it that you can find people who succeed, in the way that society imagines success (happy, relatively wealthy, good at their job, and a somewhat active member of their community), when they were not raised in a household that was optimal for breeding success?

Growing up as a young child in Oakland and Compton really took a toll on me. Daily gang violence, robberies, drive-bys, murders, suicides, etc. The crippling effect of experiencing these horrific events has a great impact on one’s mindset. A one sided view of the world develops and grows as you see more and more of these societies getting worse. I never saw the world as kind and warm-hearted. Deprived cities alters your life perception and the way you see people. The constant watching over my shoulder and scoping innocent citizens becomes very exhausting but remains extremely necessary to ensure survival.
